WE ENDED UP staying in New York for longer than expected. We were crashing at Poppy's everyday, as she insisted until we were able to find a house in LA.

The past month, Ruby had been working with the same company. They were paying her reasonably, not a lot, but enough to get by. the final photos were coming in, and I couldn't help but go to the store and get them printed and framed. Ruby found that embarrassing but I was way too proud. She didn't give up.

As we walked down the busy streets, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel like I was in a presence of a celebrity. Of course, no one else knew about Ruby yet as the photos had not been officially released, but I knew that once they did, she would blow up.

"I'm so tempted to say, "hey, do you know who she is?"" I said, already smirking at Ruby's reaction. She looked at me horrified.

"Please don't do that, that's so embarrassing." Ruby said.

I shrugged, leaning my head against her shoulder. "I'm just so proud of you."

"I know, you tell me everyday." She muttered, just as I heard my phone buzz in my bag. We continued walking as I pulled it out to look at it. It was a notification from the real estate.

"Dear Ellis, thank you for your enquiry regarding one of our properties. We thought you would be interested in these other ones we also have available in the surrounding area." I read out loud.

I scrolled through the list of houses they had attached to the message. Most of them were out of our price range until one specific house caught my eye.

It was a single storey brick home, but inside it looked renovated and decently sized.

"Holy shit, look at this." I said, zooming in on the shiny black and white bathroom. Ruby pulled off her sunglasses and peered over my phone.

"Whereabouts is that?" She asked.

"Treasure road." I read.

"That's not that far from the old apartment." Ruby said. "The neighbourhood's quiet."

"Should I sign up for it?" I asked, my heart suddenly beating fast.

"Sure, but don't get too excited, okay?" Ruby said, frowning. We had been rejected several times already, and she knew that it upset me every time.

"I know, I won't." I said, tapping away at my phone. A notification popped up saying that I had successfully registered.

"WE GOT THE house!" I announced from the couch in Poppy's living room, trying to contain my excitement to not startle her.

Poppy rushed over, letting out an excited squeal. I stood up and grabbed her hands, jumping up and down.

"I'm so happy!" I exclaimed, still bouncing even after Poppy had stopped.

"Congratulations darling," she said.

"Thank you!" I let go of her hands and dove for my phone, excited to tell Ruby the news. She was at a shoot all day, but that should have ended about an hour ago.

I couldn't stop smiling as the phone rang, occasionally looking over at Poppy beside me. She didn't answer, but I didn't mind too much. I would just have to wait until she got back to tell her.
