The Falling Stars

Young and reckless,

You dove right into my arms.

That day in the dark alley,

When I saved you from harms.

Your eyes melted my heart

And warmth flooded through me,

As we welcomed

The new member of our family.

Taking care of you was a pain,

Giving you a bath was even worse.

Oh what problems you caused!

And how much did I curse?

You ate a horde of food,

And had a strange affinity for mud.

And the shoes in the back closet,

Were chewed away like cud.

But turns out, you were innocent,

And loved me in a way I never knew.

I didn't know loyalty,

Before I knew you.

You always sat at my feet,

And stayed there every time I cried.

You'd follow me, everywhere I'd go.

And if I didn't cuddle you, you'd whine.

I didn't know, how much you meant,

Before you left my side.

And left with you my happiness,

That you had once revived.

I stand here now, looking at the stars,

With your leash in my hand.

Knowing that you made your way up there,

Just after you left this land.

My cheeks are still wet though,

Wet by my cries.

Not by your drool, not anymore,

I lost my best friend the night you died.
