Seldom a day goes by,

When I don't wonder why a heart beats.

Something so soft and fragile,

Why does it beat so hard and fast?

Shouldn't it perhaps sing?

Or flutter lightly against my weakening chest.

Something so satisfying,

Why does it beat so strong?

Some days I wonder,

If it beats itself against the walls of its cage,

So that the very cage thunders.

And I feel my emotions race.

Sometimes I think,

That every beat it makes.

Draws it closer to death's brink,

Just for my happiness' sake.

Does it bleed everyday?

While I smile ear to ear.

Doesn't it ever get tired?

Even when I try to make it stop, in tears.

Does it think it's strong enough?

A miracle hidden behind a mirage,

Isn't just a small, fragile feather?

Then why does it work like it has wings so large?

Perhaps it's to let me know,

If the fireworks in my heart.

Were gunshots, wounding its soft floor,

The ricochets tearing it apart.

Perhaps I should let it rest,

Let it be dull and grey for a while.

For I have abused it at it's best,

And made it's efforts a waste of time.

But the heart wants what it wants,

That fragile little thing.

So stubborn it beats itself every day,

To beat the thoughts in my mind.
