Chapter 8 - What Are Demons?

 “Okay Tsubasa, I need some answers.”

Tsubasa was done burying the woman that the 'demon' had killed, and I wanted Tsubasa to answer the questions I had. The little boy was sound asleep in my arms, which made me talk in a lower tone as to not wake him. The only problem was, what am I going to do with the small child and what will I tell him about his mother when he wakes?

“What about?” He asked.

“About that... demon? Is that what you said it was? Anyways... How is that possible? Demons do not exist. They are only fictional, stuff made to scare little kids into going to sleep at night.” I stated.

“That could be, but, am I not something made up as well? And also going back in time is unheard of...yet here you are, and here I am. You should keep your mind open to the unexpected. Many things will take you by surprise, most likely something that will not make sense and you have to be ready for it...”

“Expect the unexpected.” I whispered, remembering the dream.

“Exactly. Now, to answer your question. Yes, that was a demon, to be more specific, it was a Yaban Oni. A demon that has lost all reasoning and only craves blood.”

“Blood?”

“Yes, for some reason once they have lost their mind they only want to kill.”

“You said once they have lost their mind. Does that mean that there are different kinds?”

“There are more, yes. But they are separated into different classes. Just like how in the human world you have someone ranked higher than you that has more power than you, so do the demons.”

“Like the president?” I voiced my thoughts.

“Umm, maybe... I do not know much about your time.”

“Oh..is that so?” I mumbled. “You can continue.” I motioned with my hands.

“Well, the demons have someone that they have to respect. He is, what you would call, their king. He rules over every demon specie there is, and they call him Oumono Oni. I have heard that he can be ruthless with his kind and that when and if he comes across a human, he may be heartless – depending on how he feels – but, he was not always like that. Not many know what happened to him to cause him to change and become what he is now, though there are many theories. The Oumono Oni can also deceive others into thinking he is just a simple human, which in case, you may never know if you crossed paths.” he explains.

“Wow, a deceiving demon... That's good to know.”

“His family members, which are called Kamon Oni, can also deceive and look human, but they cannot last that long. Although when they are in their normal appearance, both the Oumono Oni and Kamon Oni, have human features with probably horns or tails showing, sometimes it is hands or feet, maybe their skin will be some kind of fur or scales, but their eyes are always the same. Though their eyes may vary in colors, they all have the same kind of eyes, with slits for pupils and a menacing glow to them.”

They all have the same eyes? Slits and a menacing glow? Now, that is not creepy at all. On the contrary, their eyes sound very friendly. Haha... Yeah...

Nope.

“Now, the next in rank, after Kamon Oni, are the Yobousen Akuma. They hold more power than the normal demons because they are the guards of the Oumono Oni. Originally they were just ordinary demons, until they decided to go to the king and ask him if they could be part of his guards. Not many can become guards, so the lucky few that show they have what it takes are taken in by the Oumono Oni and then he gives them some human features. They cannot turn human though, they can only stand on their legs – if they could not before – and they can also hold and move things a lot easier. That way they can protect the king better.”
