Laura's POV
I sat by Isabella and began to slowly feed her spoonfuls of baby food which to my surprise she kept neglecting. "Bella come on!" I groaned. I pretended to eat the baby food myself and forced a smile of enjoyment onto my face to trick her. "Open for Mommy, here comes the aeroplane!"
"Beh!" Isabella gurgled before spitting the baby food back out onto her high chair. I sighed in defeat and laid back in my chair. It was almost time for first period and I hadn't even left the house yet let alone dressed Isabella for nursery.
Today, of all days, I really wanted to make sure that I was attending school. After all, I didn't want Ross to think that I was avoiding him. As far as I was concerned I was in the right, I'd told him how I felt and he couldn't handle it. I couldn't hideaway at home for that. My education came first and most importantly, my daughter; the one who wouldn't eat her baby food, despite how gross it looked.
I continued to feed Isabella spoonfuls of her baby food when a soft knock came from our front door. I groaned and stood up from my chair. I already knew that my mom wouldn't answer it, although she'd been mentally feeling much better since my father had passed away she still couldn't shake off the depression that she'd endured. I couldn't blame her. Without Doctor Philips and of course Isabella's help I would be in the exact same state of mind as her.
I reached the front door and prayed to myself that I wouldn't see Ross Lynch standing on my porch again or some person from school. I was already running late enough as it was, I couldn't have anyone distracting me. I opened the door slowly and almost dropped to my knees when I locked eyes with the person in front of me. It was Vanessa. "Oh my god." I said without any expression as I wrapped my arms tightly around my older sisters neck. "I can't believe you're here... finally... you're... you're home!"
Vanessa didn't answer me, she didn't smile, she just walked through with her suitcases and dumped them in the hallway. In the seventeen years that I'd known my sister I can honestly say that she'd never acted in such a horrible manner before, especially to her family. "Ness?" I asked nervously. I watched as she walked into the kitchen, her eyes widening at the sight of Isabella. "Hasn't she grown?" I offered with a weary smile. I scooped Isabella up into my arms and held her out for Vanessa to have a cuddle with her.
"No." Vanessa whispered, sharply turning her head away from mine. "Things are different now."
I stood like a lifeless corpse in the doorway of my kitchen, clutching my daughter tightly in my arms. Then, suddenly, something clicked. I remembered the conversation Ross and I had shared about Vanessa and Riker's son; how they'd given him up for adoption and that they were both travelling home to be with their families. With a crushing feeling in my gut I held my hand out to Vanessa and sighed.
Vanessa began to break down in front of me. She fell to the floor in a hysterical fit of tears and I quickly placed Isabella in her play crib before wrapping Vanessa up tightly in my embrace and rocking her back and forth in my arms. It's ironic isn't it? How the younger sibling comforts the eldest one in their time of trouble and weakness. I never imagined myself five years ago to now, running a household by myself and taking care of everyone else when sometimes I needed taking care of too.
After awhile of Vanessa panicking and becoming breathless I decided to call the school and inform them that Isabella and I wouldn't be attending that day. I hated to do it, but my family came first. They were always my number one priority.
Isabella sat on the carpet across from us rolling around on her stomach and gurgling to herself. Vanessa and I had a cup of coffee in each of our hands as we sat silently beside one another not knowing what to say or what to do. I hadn't expected to see Vanessa so soon, I wasn't prepared for her arrival in the slightest and with all the drama going on in my life I'd completely forgotten about hers.
"She's a cutie." Vanessa murmured quietly into her warm mug of coffee. I could see her eyes flickering back and forth between Isabella and I. "She's got your eyes."
I smiled and nodded my head slowly. "Is it weird to see your little sister with a baby?"
Vanessa chuckled hoarsely to herself. It wasn't the same laugh she used to have, it was darker, almost sinister. I'm sure even a blind person would be able to sense the difference in her. "Yeah."
"So... you're back for good then?" I asked hopefully, stirring my teaspoon around my dark coffee. Vanessa nodded but she didn't speak. "And Riker?"
"Ross told you didn't he?" She asked sharply, turning her head towards mine. I sat back, suddenly feeling slightly nervous around my older sister. "I told Riker not to say anything... I just wanted to come back here and be normal."
I sighed and placed my coffee on the table beside me, listening as Isabella began to attempt various words with frustrated sighs. "Ness... nothing about our lives are normal anymore."
"I know that Laura!" She sighed. "I guess I just wanted to pretend that it was."
"I needed you Ness." I said calmly. I didn't want to upset her any further than she already was but I'd truly been left to my own devices without any help whatsoever. "I had a new baby to look after, a father to mourn, our father! I went through a break up... and where was my best friend? Somewhere out there in this crazy world of ours without even telling a soul about where you were going."
"Laura I didn't mean to hurt you." She whispered, grabbing a hold of my hands. "I always tried to act like the good girl, the strong one in this family but the second papa passed away... I couldn't pretend anymore. I had to leave and find peace within myself for my baby's sake."
I bit my lip and raised my eyebrow in a questioning tone. "Why did you do it?"
"Do what?"
"The adoption Vanessa." I said sternly.
She exhaled and pointed to Isabella. Her brown eyes were twinkling under the dark lights of the lounge. "Look at her Laura... she's like this because of you. I couldn't have done that for my child, I wasn't ready."
"But he could be out there anywhere in the world right now and you're okay about that?" I asked frustratedly. I was so angry that my nephew could be with any random stranger right now and none of us had a clue about his whereabouts.
"He's not mine anymore, Laura. A gay couple who can't have children adopted him from us, it was the right decision to make. Plus they are lovely guys. I know they'll take care of him and-"
I was about to answer back when my cellphone rang loudly from beside me, causing Isabella to start crying. I grabbed a hold of it and pointed to Vanessa. "Can you go and comfort her a minute?" I didn't wait for a reply. I answered the phone with a sigh. "Hello?"
"Laura!" It was Rydel. I could hear yelling and chanting in the background. I frowned. "Ross just broke up with Courtney and shit is going down! You need to get here now! Everyone's going crazy!"
I ended the call and quickly turned to Vanessa. "Holy shit, we need to get to school."
