Chapter 3 – Detective Hanes

“Hey Ross!” I yelled down the hall, reaching the front desk area.

For one o’clock in the morning it sure was really busy, “Ross!” I repeated.

“What?” I jumped at the sound of his voice; I turned to see him leaning up against the counter, his arms crossed.

I shot daggers with my eyes at him and then rolled my eyes, “What did you learn about O’Riley?” I clutched the file that was in my hand; everything that had to do with Jessica was in this file: Facebook and Twitter postings, text messages (to and from), Phone Call Listings, etc.

Jason cracked his neck and then cleared his throat, “he passed the lie detector test—he just wants Jessica to come home as much as everyone else does.”

“I don’t trust him…”

“Why not?” he raised an eyebrow; obviously confused.

“There’s just something about him,” I replied, putting the file on the counter.

Jason sighed and then rolled his eyes; he eyed the file and then looked up to me, “Find anything interesting in that thing?”

I nodded, “Yes actually. I was browsing through her text messages and found one text message in particular that stood out completely.”

“And what would that be?”

“On Sunday, March twenty-eighth, a message was sent to Jessica at two-forty four in the morning saying, ‘I will find you…if it’s the last thing I do.” I opened the folder, scanning through the papers and then handing him the paper with the message on it.

I watched as Jason’s expression dropped, looking from the paper to me, “You think this could be our guy?” he asked, handing the paper back.

I shrugged my shoulders at his question, “We won’t know until we bring him in for questioning…”

“I’m guessing it’s time for me to do some homework?” he asked, folding his arms.

I nodded, “Find out where the dad is, last time he sent a text message, last time he posted something on Facebook, last time a credit card or debit card was used. Stuff like that, and bring me the info back as soon as you can.”

Jason pulled his notepad out from his back pocket, skipped a few pages that had already been written on and jotted down the ideas I had just given him, “Alright…I’m on it. I’m not sure how long it’ll take though.”

“No worries about that,” I replied quickly, “Sanders and I still have to do LD tests on Katie, Sam, and Jessica’s other close friends.”
