Chapter 4 – Katie Peterson
We were told we were allowed to sleep in the sleeping quarters next door to the room we were in; we were, however, NOT allowed to leave the building. The thought of being here made me groan.
“You okay?” Sam asked.
I raised an eyebrow, “Why do you care?”
He shrugged his shoulders as his facial expression dropped; he’s been through a lot today: first he found out that Jessica was missing, Nick kept sending him death glares, and now he’s not allowed to leave. I touched his shoulder, his head slowly lifted to look me in the eyes, “Hey, I’m sorry...I didn’t mean it like that—I’m just tired.”
“Aren’t we all?” he replied with a half-smile.
I nodded, “indeed.”
“Where’s Nick?” he asked, looking past my shoulder.
I shrugged my shoulders, “He said something about going to find Detective Hanes.”
Sam nodded, kicking off his Converse—they were black—just like Jessica’s. I just kept staring at his shoes until I felt a hand on my shoulder; I broke from my stare to look at Sam, “Are you okay?” he asked me.
I nodded, “Yeah…it’s just…” I trailed off and looked back at his shoes.
“It’s just…what?” he asked.
I sighed, “You and Jessica…you guys have the same shoes.”
Sam nodded, “yeah, I know…she and I were together when we bought them,” he informed me, taking his hand back.
“No you don’t get it,” I replied, “She was wearing those shoes when she was kidnapped, Sam.”
Sam’s eyes widened at my news, “What else do I not know?” he asked, looking down at his hands.
“Well, according to the news she’s been gone since Saturday evening,” I paused and awaited a reaction—nothing, “She was wearing her black Converse, a long sleeved black shirt, and skinny jeans with a hole on the right leg on her knee.”
Sam’s eyes looked sad as they pierced my own; he sighed a little, “I think he dad has something to do with this.”
I nodded, “So do I…Nick and I both do.”
Sam cleared his throat, “I mean…I remember her telling me about a text message her dad sent her a few weeks ago—it makes sense if you put the pieces together.”
“Wait…” I stopped him, “She told you about the text message?”
Sam nodded, “Yeah, she told me the day you guys dropped her off at the hospital.”
I nodded and then sat down next to Sam on the bed and sighed, “We’re going to find her, Sam. She’s a strong girl.”
***Nicholas O’Riley’s POV***
“Detective Hanes?!” I shouted down the hall as I saw her in sighed. She turned on her heel and spotted me rushing down the hall.
“Nicholas? Is everything okay?” she asked me.
I nodded, “Yeah…everything is fine…” I paused and put a hand in my pocket, “I just had to tell you something.”
She put a file down on her desk and waited for me to speak.
“Look, I think Jessica’s father has something to do with this,” I spoke; her brows knitted together, “I mean…if you think about it, it all adds up…Jessica’s father sent her a text message a few weeks ago saying that he’d find her and nothing will basically stop him, and then her father beats her…so wouldn’t it make sense for him to do something like this?”
Detective Hanes shook her head in disappointment, “Nick, I know you’re scared, and I know you want Jessica to come home safe and sound, but we don’t have any proof except for that text message that he has anything to do with this.”
“Shouldn’t that text message be enough?” I exclaimed.
She shook her head again, “No Nick…it isn’t enough, if we took him to court for this and only had one piece of evidence the judge would have our heads. It’s lack of evidence to hold against someone…plus we have no idea where Jack Montez is…that’s what Detective Ross is trying to figure out right now,” she paused searching my eyes, “it’s only the first night of the full investigation Nick…give it a little time—everything will come together.”
I nodded with a sigh, “Okay…”
“Okay,” she closed, “Go get some sleep and we’ll pick up in the morning okay?”
I nodded my head and then walked back to the sleeping quarters where I had left Katie and Sam; and of course they were still there when I got back.
“Hey,” Katie said standing up, “Anything new?”
I shook my head and sighed, “Nope, she doesn’t believe that Jessica’s dad has anything to do with it,” I paused to collapse down on the bed, “she says that there isn’t enough evidence. Just one text message and him beating his daughter isn’t good enough.”
Katie rolled her eyes and then looked down at Sam who had fallen asleep, “What do you have against him anyways?” I knew she was talking about Sam obviously; he was the only other person here in the room.
I huffed, “He’s competition—he could get in the way of me trying to get Jessica back…and now with Jessica missing…it’s making it even harder on me.”
“Did you ever think that this could be hard on him as well?” she paused. “Jessica’s really the only friend that he has…and you don’t even want him near her. He’s a nice guy; just give him a chance.”
“I can try…”
“No, Nick…” she spoke, lying down on her individual bed across from me, “You need to make sure it happens—he needs friends right now…and I’m the only one he has.” She flicked the lights off, leaving the conversation like that and falling asleep.
I sighed as a tear rolled down my cheek. Jessica…where are you?
