Chapter 11 – Lucas Jensen

I watched Eric collapse into Katie’s arms…in the past year I have known Eric; I have never ever seen him like this.

I understand we all missed Jessica and all but he’s taking this rather hard; there was a small tap in the window to the questioning room. I turned my head to see Detective Ross motioning for me to go into the testing room.

I sighed, walking out the door and into the testing room, “You ready?” the detective asked.

I just nodded, sitting down, and patiently waited for him to attach the wires to my fingers and head—which took a good two to three minutes. The detective moved around to where he was supposed to sit and take notes and I just waited for the first question.

“Lucas, when was the last time you saw Jessica?” and here come the questions.

“Morning of her sisters funeral,” I spoke, truthfully.

“Haven’t you all,” he mumbled.

I laughed a little, “I bet you’ve gotten that so much.”

“I’ve gotten that statement as well, young man,” he replied, “so don’t be a smart mouth.”

I rolled my eyes, “Okay, next question please…”

Detective Ross sighed, annoyingly, “What is your relationship with Jessica?”

“She’s one of my really good friends,” I reply instantly, “She and I got to know each other over the past few months and I couldn’t be happier to have a friend like her—but now that she’s gone…I feel like I can’t do anything to help her.”

There was a really long pause—which made me feel uncomfortable—as I sat in the wood chair; my back turned towards Detective Ross. Thousands of thoughts raced through my head: Where was Jessica? Why would someone take her? What did this person even want with her? But most importantly…is she still alive?

Ross cleared his throat, breaking my thoughts, “How long have you known Jessica?”

I sniffled a little, “About a year and a half now.”

“How do you know Megan Montez?”

His question hit me: Megan. She was young. She was my brother’s best friend—the girl my brother loved more than anything…and now she’s gone…all because of her father.

I sighed, “Megan was my brother’s best friend—he loved her with all of his heart…until her father beat her to death.”

“Her father did what?” Detective Ross asked, sounding a little taken aback.

I sighed, stood up—wires still hooked onto my body—and turned to face Detective Ross, “He. Beat. Her.”

I ripped the wires off of my body and stormed out of the room and away from the detective. Neither of the Montez girls deserved this…none of it.
