Rose
I woke up to the annoying ringing of my mobile phone. Sleepily, I grabbed the phone from the nightstand and picked up the call without checking the caller id and grumbled, " I hate you".
Honestly, I wasn't a morning person and hated being woken up like this. If you're curious as to why I didn't even check the caller ID before answering, it's because I know the only person who dared to call me this early in the morning could only be the devil himself, my best friend Aaron.
Muttering some more curses, I waited for the person on the other side to respond and as usual, all I got in reply was a familiar masculine laugh.
"I know you love me babycakes", he cooed and he laughed some more as I found the frown slowing slipping from my face and was instead replaced with a small smile.
"What good would it be if I did? You wouldn't love me back; you don't swing my way." I replied faking sadness and trying my best to stifle my laugh.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk, I knew I was a heart breaker, nobody can resist me." He replied laughing and I could feel him smirking on the other end of the call.
I rolled my eyes. Boys.
"Okay, so get ready in an hour we are going to hang out todayyy!" He yelled and I had to take my phone away from my ear to save them from any damage. Before I could even get a chance to complain, he had already ended the call. Typical Aron I thought to myself as I rolled my eyes again with a silly smile on my face.
Yup, my best friend Aaron wasn't into girls. Did it ever bother me? No. Aaron and I were best friends since we were very young and he had always been like a big brother to me. Even though we didn't go to the same school, he always had my back. Provided that our mothers were best friends, he would always come over to my house and vice versa. Only his parents and close friends including me knew about him being gay, but nevertheless that neither affected nor lessened how much we loved him. He was like family to me and had been with me through the ups and downs of my life. Even though he could be extremely annoying and an asshole at times which makes me want to kill him, he was my best friend and I loved him dearly.
I checked the time on my phone and it was just 9 in the morning. I hated waking up before 10 during holidays and debated going back to sleep but knowing Aaron, if I was not ready by the time he arrived, he would drag me out in my sleepwear. Grumbling I got out of bed and drank a glass of water as I headed towards the toilet to do my business. After brushing my teeth and having a quick shower, I wrapped myself in a towel and walked towards my cupboard to pick out the clothes for the day.
After rummaging through my clothes for a while, I decided on wearing black high waisted skinny jeans with a simple white crop top with net sleeves.
As I sat down on the dresser to untangle my hair, I found myself staring back at my reflection. I had fair skin contrasting my raven black hair which now reached down my back. I had inherited most of my facial features except my eyes from my beautiful mother, and like she always jokingly says, she's the one I should thank them for. My mom had captivating grey eyes, whereas I had inherited my chocolate brown eyes from my dad.
The buzzing of my mobile snapped me out of my daze.
"Aaron - I'll be there in 15 minutes "
"Shit, I'm going to get late", I cursed under my breath as I quickly applied my moisturiser, some mascara, and lip gloss. I simply put my hair up in a ponytail with curtain bangs framing my face and took a quick look at myself in the mirror. I grabbed my purse and wore a pair of white sandals as I dashed out of my room. I practically ran across the corridor and down the stairs towards the kitchen.
As I reached the end of the stairs, I found the house extremely quiet which wasn't unusual. Only me and my parents were living in our mansion right now and our housekeeper Marry was on sick leave. The kitchen, the living room, and other rooms were on the ground floor whereas, my room, along with my parent's, as well as some extra guest rooms were on the first floor of the house. Occasionally relatives, close friends and business associates who would come over occupied the guest rooms, but currently they were empty.
When I reached the kitchen, luckily it was empty. I breathed a sigh of relief and yanked the fridge open, hurriedly gulped down some apple juice directly from the carton and shoved a croissant into my mouth when I heard my mom call out my full name.
I gulped audibly as I slowly turned towards my mother who was standing near the door not looking happy at all. Don't judge me, my mom might be beautiful as an angel but could be really scary when she was mad.
"Where are you off to in such a rush, young lady?" She asked as she gave me a disapproving look.
"Mom...I uh... IwasrunninglatetomeetAron"I quickly blurted out as I caught sight of my dad slowly waking towards the kitchen clearly enjoying the show.
Mom narrowed her eyes at me, "You weren't even feeling well until last night, are moving to your grand mom's tomorrow, but haven't even started packing up or managed anything and have time to fool around?"
I pleadingly looked over to my Dad for help who was standing behind my mom, but he just gave me an amused smirk which made me huff out in annoyance. This means I just had one way out.
I sighed as I slowly made my way to the dining table in the middle of the room, and sat down. Pulling out my best puppy eyes, I looked down at my hands which were on my lap and started twiddling my thumbs with a sad expression on my face.
"I'm completely fine now and aware that I'm moving to Grandma's tomorrow. That's why I wanted to spend some time with Aaron before I go. He has promised to come over when I'm leaving to help me with everything." I replied in a small voice.
"But if you don't want me to, I won't go out today..." I added with a sad tone in my voice. After a pause of a few seconds, I cautiously sneaked a look at my mother's face and noticed that her eyes had softened.
Dad stepped up at that moment and swung an arm around my Mom, "C'mon darling, we know she's going away tomorrow, we can at least let her spend some time with Aaron. You know much they are going to miss each other when she'll be gone; they were friends since they were babies. "
Mom pondered about what Dad said for a minute, and turned towards me, "Okay you can go, but be sure to return home safely on time. We have invited some investors of our new project over for dinner, and I want you to be present as well."
When I hesitated to answer, mom shot me with a look that wouldn't take no as an answer. I internally groaned but tried to act like an obedient child and quickly nodded. Mom looked satisfied at my response and dad smiled at her.
I quickly hugged my parents promising I'll be back in a few hours and dashed towards the door. When I turned back to look at them before I got out of the kitchen, I saw my dad whisper something in mom's ear which made her giggle. Their infinite love for each other could be clearly seen in their eyes. I found a smile tugging the corner of my lips seeing them so happy and in love with each other.
Living with my parents as an only child had its perks but also made my parents extra protective and concerned about my wellbeing. My parents had met at a friend's party some twenty years ago and have been so in love ever since. My dad owns business companies and my mom is a fashion designer and also an investor in dad's companies. Despite their busy schedules, they always made time for their family and each other, which was admirable.
Their love was rare and has always been an inspiration to everyone around them, but I highly doubt if I could ever find a love like theirs.
