As the week finishes out, I am still at home. I haven't talked to Kyle in two days. He keeps texting me, but I don't answer.
I don't know what to do.
What if Kyle is lying to me? What if I fell for a player who is better at playing the game than I am?
What if he actually is true about his feelings? Can I finally admit mine?
My phone buzzes in my hand.
"Hello?" I answer, my voice croaking.
"Hailey, are you okay? What's wrong? Why haven't you answered me?" Kyle's voice asks, his voice rushed.
I swallow. "I'm... just fine, Kyle. I just have... the flu."
Lie.
"I'm coming right over, Hailey."
"No, no! Don't," I rush. I swallow again. "I don't want to get you sick. I'm fine, really."
Kyle sighs. "I miss you, Hailey. And I want to see you. I don't care if you get me sick. We need to talk about stuff."
"Just please, don't come. I'm okay," I tell him. He groans.
"You're killing me."
If this is killing you then my secrets will murder you.
"I'm sorry. Hopefully I'll be back on Monday," I answer after a long pause where I'm trying not to sob into the phone.
"Okay, fine. I miss you a lot " he says, his voice dead serious.
I bite down hard on my bottom lip. "I miss you too."
Just like that I admitted my feelings. Fuck my life.
With that, we both hang up. Within a second, my phone buzzes again.
"What?" I snap. Someone laughs on the other line.
"Nice to hear from you too Halys," the voice says.
Halys.
"Who is this?" I ask, my chest hurting.
"I think we both know who it is."
And then I recognize the voice. Adrian.
"How the hell did you get my number?" I demand, my heart racing. Not because of nerves, but because I'm mad.
"Some guy told me he knew you and then just gave me your number. He said to tell you that 'more secrets will fly soon if you don't hurry up.' What kind of trouble are you in?" Adrian explains. I can hear his 'tsk' in his voice.
"I'm not in any trouble. Just some guy who thinks he owns me," I tell him.
"You want my help?"
"No I don't. I just want you to never talk to me again. I am better than I used to be. Don't drag me down that black hole again, because this time, it will get you too." I hang up as soon as the words fly out of my mouth.
I can't cry anymore. I have already let Zach win for a couple of days.
I can't do that anymore. I am going to show him that he doesn't matter to me anymore. That I am going to be happy with whoever I choose.
Period.
