Kyle follows me into the house, which I am so thankful for.
Adrian sits on the couch, in shorts and a sweatshirt. One of the sweatshirts that I remember wearing.
"Hey-" he starts.
"Don't talk to me," I say, cutting him off.
"Can you please at least try to act like I'm not the person who ruined your life?" He asks, as I take my backpack off, setting it on the chair.
The bruise on Adrian's jaw is full on, all blue and purple.
I fake smile at him. "You're the biggest ass I have ever met," my voice totally fake.
Kyle bursts into laughter behind me. Adrian glares at him.
"Sorry, it's just really funny. You guys are like my grandparents, except my grandpa says back, 'then why did you marry me?'"
I give him a look and he stops laughing in a second.
"Trouble in paradise?" Adrian ask.
I roll my eyes. "Mind your own damn problems fucker."
Taking Kyle's open hand, I lead him up the stairs to my room. I shut the door behind me.
"What was with you and Zach today?" Kyle asks, laying down next to me on my bed, playing with our fingers.
I sigh.
I'll just rip off the band aid.
"Zach confessed to me that he has feelings for me. He kissed me. I told him that we were only friends because I have you. Now, he's making my life a living hell," I explain.
Well, I guess I left out the parts where he drugged me and had sex with him.
Kyle bites the corner of his lip. "Did you kiss him back?"
Yes.
"No," I lie.
"Is that why you were gone a lot last week?"
I shake my head. "No, I was really sick."
Kyle looks down at our hands and smiles. "Then I'm not mad. I just don't want him to ruin our relationship."
I frown. "Really he already has."
"What?" Kyle asks.
"Somehow he stalked down Adrian, and gave him my number. I don't know how, or even why Zach thought he should do this too me," I ramble, not looking at Kyle.
I don't want Zach around Kyle, but I also don't want to ruin there friendship. I guess I just messed everything up when I was stupid.
"Fuck," Kyle mutters, rolling over on his back.
"Yeah, fuck," I agree.
"I just don't understand why he would do that. I mean, he is my best friend," Kyle mutters, rolling back over to face me.
I swallow.
He is your best friend, and he drugged me to sleep with him.
"I don't know," I agree, my voice soft.
****
It's almost midnight, and I can't go to sleep. My mind is racing with thoughts that I can't put to sleep.
Adrian.
Kyle.
Zach.
I'm such a wreck. Why do these things happen to me?
Sighing, I crawl out of bed. Walking down the stairs, I make my way to the kitchen. I don't bother turning a light on.
Opening the fridge, I grab a bottle of water.
"What are you doing still up?" Adrian's voice says from behind me.
"I can't sleep.. You?" I ask, flipping the wall switch, turning on the lights.
Adrian sits on top of the counters, wearing sweatpants, shirtless.
"Too many thing on my mind," he answers.
"What could possible be on your mind? I'm the one who has her world crashing down around her," I ask, sliding up next to him on the counter.
He sadly smiles at me. "I'm thinking about leaving.. I don't think I'm helping here."
I swallow. "Don't... Don't leave just because I'm not nice to you," I tell him after a long pause.
Why am I saying this? Why am I giving him my time? I shouldn't be. He doesn't deserve it. Curse my conscience.
"Hailys, I don't want to ruin the rest of your life. I already hurt you before," Adrian says.
"Even if I can't be with you again, it's almost nice having you here in a fucked up way-a really fucked up way," I nervously chuckle as I talk, not really sure what I'm saying.
"I'll think about it."
I nod and go back upstairs to my room.
What the hell was I saying?
