JJ POV:

I plunged myself into the uncomfortable, unstable hospital chair.

I'd tagged along to a hospital visit with mum and Emmy. I can't remember for the life of me the reason.

A six year old Emilohi sat on mum's knee whilst I sat on a separate chair next to them. I knew why we were there. It was to discuss Em's leukaemia treatment. At that point, she'd go to the hospital twice a week and be on the day unit whilst she received chemotherapy.

As she was so young, the doctors had to be careful about the way they treated Em. Because she couldn't take tablets, she had to be given the chemo through her bloodstream. She was given meds, but if the medicine was pumped too quickly, Emmy's little body and tiny system wouldn't be able to handle it. So whenever she was given chemotherapy, she had to stay in the hospital all day or overnight.

I cherished every moment with her - I still do. What if the cancer came back? What if it never went away?

This shit scares me, man. Like, it could always happen again.

I didn't hear any of the doctor's words, but I know that the three of us pottered out of that room, then out of the building, not unhappy.

"What did all of that mean, mum?" I asked as I plopped myself into the front seat.
"He just said that she's no better. But she's not any worse, so let's take that as a blessing." Mum told me in a low voice, igniting the car.

"Yeah." I sighed. "Sure."
"Okay?" Mum snuck a glance at me before looking ahead at the road.
"Okay." I nodded, plastering a smile on my face.

Fuck you, cancer. You ruined my sister's childhood. She had to grow up fighting for her life; no kid should ever have to go through that shit.

"Mummy?" A tired Em said through a yawn.
"Yes, darling?"
"What are we having for tea?" She rubbed her eyes.
"Pizza." Mum answered softly.
"Okay." Em replied.

Since being diagnosed, I always remembered Emmy being extremely tired 24/7, and usually was ill the day after a chemotherapy session, often having to take time off school.

Em received chemo once or twice per week and had MRI scans every month. Due to the severity of her leukaemia, the medication was strong. But little Emmy's a fighter, she's independent, and she'll never say no to a challenge.

Hell, she did a damn bungee jump with Harry, Freezy and Joe. And a skydive with Ben Morris. If that doesn't show that you're fearless, then what the fuck does?

"Hey, Em?" I turned around to face her
"Yeah?" She rubbed her eyes.
"Wanna play Mortal Combat when we get in?" I smirked.
"Oh, yes please!" Em perked up suddenly.

And so we did.

The thing with Emmy, is that even though her hair had fallen out, and she was extremely ill, we still treated her like a normal human being. Mum and Dad always treated the three of us equally, even though I was the eldest, even though Em was poorly, even though Deji always got the best school report. That's how everything should be - unbiased, just, and fair.
