The sunrise broke through the darkness of the corridor. Or rather, what the Rat Man had come to think of as a sunrise. Lights clicked on, machines hummed and moved, and materials circulated through transport tubes. Aperture Science was once again ready to work a six-nine shift. From all appearances, the workplace was extremely normal (aside, of course, from all of the bizarre inventions being created). The employees worked at their desks normally every day.
But the Aperture Science Enrichment Center was far from normal.
Something strange was going on. Every time an employee showed some sign of defiance, they were taken for testing. Almost no one survived testing. A couple weeks ago the Rat Man had escaped with some other employees. Now, he was the only one that hadn't been caught.
After the disaster, the higher ups had claimed the dangerous experiment had been shut down. The Rat Man seriously doubted that. Something was going on. He was sure the person behind the disaster was running everything. Soon, he was going to head to the command chamber to check things out.
Currently, he had another problem on his hands. The Rat Man slid into a hidden room behind a test chamber. The Enrichment Center had a whole cache of test chambers. Test subjects were a regular sight at the Enrichment Center, always testing new creations. Now, however, test subjects were in short supply. But this was the basis of his problem.
As he plopped down onto a box-turned-seat, a voice called out,
"What happened out there?".
"There was lots of activity around the relaxation vaults," replied the Rat Man. "At least two thousand test subjects have been commissioned. But we can use this to our advantage. If my suspicions prove correct, we need a certain test subject to help us."
"And what are your suspicions?" inquired the voice.
"That the experiment has failed and command is no longer in charge. That's why I'm heading to the control center. If I'm right, I'll go to the tech room and put our test subject ally in the top of the list." He turned to leave when the voice called out after him.
"Even if your plan works, it could take years before this test subject is even awakened." The Rat Man turned and whispered his answer.
"Exactly. Time is on our side."
And then he was gone.
