Chapter 56

„Who's there?" I heard a familiar voice rising from beyond the barricade. It must have been no one else but Enjolras himself shouting my way in a distrusting voice.

"It's me, Victorie!" I shouted as loud as I could, "let me in!"

I heard someone cursing, but I could not tell apart his voice. Suddenly, a part of the barricade shifted and I was able to sneak through in between the old furniture on the inside. As soon as I entered, a crowd of at least fifteen boys surrounded me. They were shouting something, their voices elapsing so much that I could not understand that chaos. Finally, I could see a man in blood red jacket trying to squeeze inside. At some point, Enjolras just gave up and bellowed,

"Silence! To your positions!" He knew no refusals. He was the commanding officer now, and everyone had to follow his orders. After all, it was war. The boys obeyed very quickly, leaving only Enjolras, Courfeyrac and Combeferre with me. The three of my best friends looked at me with thunder in their eyes. I knew they were angry with me, after all I was not supposed to be there...

"What the hell were you thinking coming here!?" Enjolras shouted first.

"You could get killed here!" Courfeyrac seemed even more worried than his predecessor.

"I know," I muttered through my teeth, "But I am not going to apologize for that. I am not sorry that I came. I had to be here, so I quit the ballet." I declared with pride.

"You quit the ballet?" Combeferre seemed dumbstruck, frowning with worry. I nodded my head to confirm the piece of news I just threw on them,

"Obviously I quit, that was not important whatsoever!"

"You are truly insane!" Enjolras shouted as Combeferre shook his head with resignation, as if he could not believe when I have done.

"I do not care what you think, Enjolras. I might be insane but I have planned this revolution with you, and I am going to take part in it!" I looked at all three of them with confidence, trying to convince them that I being here was actually a good idea.

"No!" They explained in unison.

"Come on boys," I grinned at them, "You cannot have victory without Victorie."

I noticed that Courf smirked when he heard my clever remark. The three of them looked at each other with stern gazes and I knew they were having yet another nonverbal conversation. I felt as if I was waiting for them to make a decision for hours and hours. Those were one of the longest minutes of my life.

"Fine," When Enjolras spoke in the end I could not believe it. He had really said it, "you may stay but the moment it gets too dangerous and either of us tells you to leave, you shall leave. No questions asked."

I looked at him and sighed theatrically in order to inform him that I did not like his conditions but he kept staring at me with his brows risen, not letting it go until I finally gave in,

"Fine," I mumbled, "I will leave if it gets too dangerous." Obviously I was not intending to do so, under any circumstances whatsoever.

"Very well," Enjolras muttered, "Now, if you allow me, I have to go and inspect the munitions' barrels. Courfeyrac will fill you in on the events," he turned around, clearly not in a mood for a leisurely conversation, and left together with Combeferre to take care of the revolution.
