Kenny's POV

It hurts. So, so much.

What hurts even more is that I have to smile and act like nothing’s wrong.

And it pissed me off that he didn’t know why I was so hurt.

Is it because Chris’s been ignoring me for this girl?

Possibly, but I have no idea.

My phone started ringing. I checked the caller ID it was my mom.

I excused myself and answered the phone.

“Hello?”

Sniffling. “H-Honey--c-come home p-please.”

“Mom, what’s wrong?” I said, panicking.

“G-Gracie--” uncontrollable sobs.

“Mom, please calm down.” I begged. “What’s wrong?”

More sobs, then mom screeched,

“GRACIE’S DEAD!”

*****

I dropped the phone on the carpeted floor. It fell with a thud, and the line disconnected.

Gracie’s dead

Dead.

The words rang in my ears.

Refusing to believe, I stormed out of Starbucks, not bothering to say goodbye to my friends and a delusional Chris.

I started my car and angrily drove the 5 miles home at 90mph.

Gracie can’t be dead.

My hope fell when I pulled through our front house.

Police cars were everywhere.

Hannah's POV

“KENNY!” I yelled.

But she didn’t hear me. She stormed out of Starbucks and I saw her starting her car, driving away with an angry speed.

I saw her phone on the ground, and picked it up. Why didn’t she take her phone?

When I returned to the table, Chris and Addie were gone.

“Where the hell is Chris?” I demanded.

“He went on a date with Addie,” Trent said. “Why?”

“What? Kenny just ran out and her best friend is gone?!” I said, my voice rising. Something was wrong. I could feel it, and it weighted down on me.

“Hannah, what’s wrong?” Aaron asked.

“Kenny ran out just a minute ago. I don’t know where or why. She dropped her phone, though.” I said, feeling nervous for some reason.

“Should we go by her place to drop it off?” Lucas asked.

Trent shook his head. “Give her some time. She looked pretty torn when she saw Chris and Addie.”

“I don’t like it.” I admitted.

“Me either.” Trent sighed. “Chris is much better with Kenny.”

“There’s something I don’t like about Addie, either.” Erik said. “She was nice, but still--”

“There’s something about her that you just can’t describe but you feel it... that something is wrong?” Lucas guessed.

Erik nodded.

I looked at the three of them. “Guys…I think we better check on this Addie person,”

Kenny's POV

I sprinted out of the door and ran to the house, but a police officer stopped me.

“Miss, I’m sorry but you can’t pass through. There’s been a kidna---”

“WHAT?!” I screamed. “LET ME GO!!”

“Hey... hey hey, HEY! LET HER THROUGH SHE’S WITH ME” Jamie called over

The officer’s expression changed. “Go ahead”

“JAMIE WHAT'S GOING ON?!” I yelled, pushing past her and running into the house.

It was a mess. Vases were scattered everywhere, and the window was broken.

“Kenny..” Jamie started. I turned around and ran into his arms. I sobbed uncontrollably in his arms, falling to the floor.

“P-please tell me she’s okay” I begged.

Jamie didn’t answer.

“P-please!” I said again, tears falling down like a waterfall onto Jamie.

An officer gently placed her hand on my shoulder. She shook her head. My heart tore.

Gracie can’t be dead.

I shook my head, not believing it.

Until I got up and saw it.

It was written in blood,

THIS IS WHAT YOU GET. SO SAY GOODNIGHT GRACIE.

I shattered.
