Thomas POV;

"What's Gally doing?" Thomas asked Newt. He was watching the tall boy bind his hands with leather and draw a circle in the sand. It was bonfire night, and all the other boys were getting ready. Thomas was still rather confused, so he was helping Newt lay out logs for them to sit on.

"It's bonfire night," Newt said, as if that explained it.

"I get that," Thomas said, a little frustrated, "But what's Gally doing? He doesn't seem to be helping much."

"Oh, Gally's getting the fighting ring ready. It's his favourite bonfire night game," Newt said, nudging Thomas to get him to grab the other side of a log to help him shift it.

"Fighting ring?" Thomas asked.

"Geez Tommy, you're really lost aren't ya?" Newt asked, sighing. "Basically it's a game of 'who can get beat up the longest by Gally', but everyone has fun. Ultimately it's about letting off any steam we have, being cooped up in here. And it's the one time Gally seems to really enjoy himself, apart from-," Newt paused, looking in a direction behind Thomas.

Thomas turned around, watching Ward walk towards the space, carrying some heavy boxes over her shoulders now. She didn't seem to need any help, but as she came towards Gally she barked at him. "Oi Treetrunk, where's your manners?" she asked. Thomas watched, dumbfounded, at how Gally reacted. The boy perked up instantly, though he hid most of his excitement by frowning. He walked towards her, towering over her as he grabbed one of the boxes off her and held it under his arm.

Thomas frowned, wondering why he hadn't taken both of the boxes, but Newt seemed to know what he was thinking, because he answered the question before he could ask

Thomas frowned, wondering why he hadn't taken both of the boxes, but Newt seemed to know what he was thinking, because he answered the question before he could ask. "They don't get much time together, during the day," Newt said, watching the two fondly, "any chance they get to walk together, doing jobs around the glade, they make sure they take it. Ward always makes the excuse that Gally's slacking off or that things are too heavy for her, but we all know she's fibbing. She's almost as strong as he is, she doesn't need any help. And Gally always says it's only because he's a gentleman that he helps her."

Thomas scoffed, "Gally? A gentleman?" he asked, still watching them as they walked past in silence.

"Tommy, look at them," Newt said, leaning against a tree. Thomas looked at them closer, watching as Ward slowly placed her hand into Gally's. They didn't make any other sign of affection towards one another, but as they walked away they never let go of each other. "I told you, completely smitten," Newt said, before going back to a pile of logs and lifting one end.

"Tommy, a hand?" he asked, snapping the new boy out of his thoughts. Thomas nodded, still watching the couple walk away from the bonfire.

"Y-yeah, sure," he muttered, lifting up the end of the log so quickly he practically knocked Newt to the floor. Newt raised an annoyed eyebrow at him, before slowly getting up. "Sorry Newt," Thomas said, lifting the log slower the next time.
