Only when her father tried to kick him on the ground did Antonio rise to restrain Leo. There was only so much respect beatings he could take and this wasn't that time.
He hated to man handled his friend and mentor this way but it was the only way he would stop attacking him.
"You've ruined her life!" Leo screamed and Antonio pushed him away from him and the older man staggered against the wall to catch his breath.
"You've ruined my baby's life," and God help him, Leo began to cry. Liana joined in soon after and soon Antonio was fighting his own tears for what he had done to Liana and her family.
This wasn't what he wanted for her at all.
A partner who none of her family liked (and they would dislike him soon enough if her father's reaction was anything to go by) and a relationship shrouded in shame, disappointment and regret.
Further to that, he had a lot to deal with when he got home and her name was Olivia Sabbatini although that would change soon enough.
She was going to give him a divorce whether she liked it or not. He was a lawyer for God's sake, he was sure he could find some way out of it.
"Antonio has not ruined my life Daddy," Liana was saying as she walked over to her father and looked at him proudly.
"Antonio has brought happiness and now a child into my life...why is that such a bad thing to you?"
"Can't you see he's using you Liana?"
"No," she snapped, angry now. "No I can't see that because it's not true and if you think it is then...then you c-can leave."
Leo turned to look at his daughter and his eyes widened with shock then fury,
"You're throwing me out?"
"It's my house,"
"THAT I PAY FOR!" her father bellowed and as he did so, he seemed to regret it instantly. Antonio looked over at Liana stood definitely by his side and saw her face crumble with such pain.
"I see,"
"Liana I..."
Liana turned away from her father then and looked at Antonio,
"Can we go...please?"
Antonio nodded as Liana turned from him and disappeared into what he assumed was her bedroom.
Leo stood looking distraught but not turning to look at Antonio until Liana came out of the room she was clearly dressed to leave,
"Liana I didn't mean that," Liana ignored her father, picked up a small handbag from beside the door and proceeded to open the door and walk out. Antonio had no choice but to follow.
----
"What was that about?" Antonio finally asked when he and Liana were finally alone in a hotel room in Central London.
"Respect, that's what that was about." He didn't bother to question her until Liana sighed and immediately started crying. He approached her an wrapped his arms around her,
"I was raised to appreciate everything I have, everything and because of that I always want to pay my own way." Antonio nodded. "I know my life is easier than most but where I can until I graduate, I pay for myself, food, clothes etc."
Liana laughed,
"I know in the grand scheme of things I'm not struggling at all but my father knows how much it means to me to get my qualifications so I can make my own money, free of his influence."
Antonio nodded again,
"The fact that he threw that in my face hurts more than anything. I tell him every day how much I appreciate what he does for me so for him to say that..."
"I get it baby, I do."
They were quiet for a long time,
"What are we going to do Antonio?"
Antonio sighed and pulled Liana closer to him, lowering his head to kiss the top of her head.
"You are going to take it easy while this is all figured out. Me...I'm going to get a divorce."
