The interview didn't go so well. My stomach rumbles multiple times and I felt myself come across as needy. I think at one point I begged for the job. Then the most embarrassing thing of the century happened — her father who is a well to do businessman told me that I need to eat something. He gave me all of the days left over complimentary cookies and stuff, I was forced to tell him my situation. I mean he understood where I was coming from, but I doubt I'll 'hear back' from him.
I look at my phone's time and see that it's 7:30pm. That's when the game starts. Since I'm only going to go home and stress myself to sleep I might as well watch Atlas play against another nearby bastard university. I cut across the freshly cut green grass outside of the main area, normally you get the stoners and hippie laying on it every lunch and break...it's weird to see this place look like a deserted garden.
"Dan!" I hear her familiar American accent calling my name as she runs through the sprinklers which has literally just been set off. "Ah!" She screeches as she she dive bombs into my side like we're a couple or something. "Why did you just run through sprinklers?" I point in the direction she just came from with a smile.
"My dad told me that you're facing eviction!" She laughs, not because of the eviction probably. But because she has a white dress on which is now sticking to her body and see through. I try and be a gentleman and not to look...which is hard given that I'm really into this girl.
"Oh..." my voice trails off. Suddenly I feel violated that she knows my information. But that's bound to happen her father did give me a bin bag full of biscuits and stuff, the guy was concerned. "You got the job!" She smiles looking proud of herself. "This earlier you weren't so pleased to see me. Like in front of those other job seekers..." they're the popular ones. The people that she hangs around with, I mean I'm pretty sure she's close with Alexia. "Uhm..." Anxiously Kitty looks at me guiltily before looking away.
"I like you...Dan. Like as a friend...I can always count on you helping me out with my essays and stuff, and I appreciate that. You discard your busy schedule for me..." and here comes the downer. "And I know recently we haven't been talking and that's why today I wanted to change that. My friends...I mean...you know how they get when I hang around with people they don't like" I close my eyes feeling awful. I think she's giving me pity and sympathy. I don't want that.
"And the reason why I got this job is because I'm going to be homeless?" As soon as Kitty goes to say yes after hesitating for a couple of seconds I let out a laugh. I'm angry and sad at the same time, "so this is pity?" With that Kitty shakes her head. "No Dan...we want to help you. You're a great friend to me..." I want to tell her that myself and my sister both know that she uses me to get her homework done. These past sixty four days should've proven if she really was my friend by now. I thought this lunchtime that things was going to change.
"I'm going to the game." I mumble under my breath. But before I can walk I feel guilty...she ran through sprinklers for me. But thinking about it she didn't know until they turned on while she was doing so — would've she ran after me if the sprinklers was already on?
I take off my purplish hoodie and give it to her, "please Dan..." she whispers as I help her put it on. I then step back as she zips it up. Since she has a very slim frame — we both do — and I like baggy things it's big and loose fitted on her. "Football..." I whisper again as this time point towards our stadium as I hear loud cheering in the distance. Kitty falsely smiles and nods her head.
"I'll come with and watch." Kitty pretty adamantly hooks her arm through mine and holds onto it for dear life. I look down and try not to die inside. This is the first time a girl has ever linked her arm through mine. Pretty sick.
While I try to keep my cool, we walk to the stadium. It's on the uni's ground so it isn't huge. I don't think New York has the room for that. "Atlas...Atlas...ATLAS!" Everyone on our side screams while Rocco Rhino, our pathetic attempt of a mascot tries to...dry hump one of the dancers. This isn't like a high school game, members of the public come to watch, most bet money. There's no cheerleaders as such, only dancers and bands do their thing during half time. The only thing closest to an American high school that I'll experience is probably home games and the mascots.
"I hate this already..." Kitty mumbles under her breath. That's when I stop being so selfish. This is probably her first 'nearly professional football' game too. I know she was born and raised in New York though...
I break my pissed off act and nod my head. I really should be grateful even if she is talking to me out of pity, it's more than what anyone else is doing anyway.
That's when I point to two free seats. I mean they're outside of the bathroom but the area looks like we don't have to be huddled up together. "Shall we?!" I shout down her ear because of the loud music that they're playing.
I know New York never sleeps but what about the citizens that do? How does these events get off with noise complaints...the glass of the sky high buildings echo and everything. New York never ceases to amaze me.
"Sure." Kitty smiles at me as we walk towards the empty chairs. This is going to be an eventful game by the looks of things...
