I stroke Lana's cheek as she tries to get to sleep. She's been trying all morning and it's really hard to watch her, either her snotty noise of cough wakes her up, "it's okay" I whisper leaning close to her buggy. We're at the far end of the room, I don't want anyone catching her cold...flu...whatever this is.
Kit; Tell me how it goes x
Me; Of course x
At least we're back to using kisses. Ever since Lana has been here...it's been pretty tough. I'm not sure if this is what we both was expecting from parenthood. Our child is definitely demanding...attention seeking...me. "Nonono..." I say as Lana starts to toss and turn, like she's about to burst out crying. "Come on, be brave...I know you can." when she was more or less a newborn I had to hold her while the doctors had to give her the routinely injections. She was so brave, she wasn't the one crying — I was. I mean, Kitty was too. It's a natural parent instinct to be upset when our daughter is going through pain.
Lana thankfully doesn't cry. She doesn't do anything. "Dada!" she then shouts stretching her arms out towards me. Aw shit. Her eyes are huge and watery, she just looks looks so unwell. "Come on." I whisper getting her out of the pram and holding her. "Better?" I ask. I know she doesn't know of the word 'yes' so she just kind of nods her head. "Okay then." I whisper back after kissing her on the cheek.
"Mmm...a?" three words. Dada, no and mama. I mean...apart from the 'no' I think me and Kitty are doing quite well. "Mama is at work. Work" I repeat again in a light voice for empathise, but she doesn't understand. "Lana Smith." With that I falsely smile as I stand up cradling Lana in my arms as I push the pram in direction of the room which the nurse stands in the doorway.
"Hello!" she cheerfully says holding the door open as I walk in. "Hi" I hate doctors. I used to come to this surgery a lot...well Kitty did when had to get her tablets shipped over from America.
I sit down in the empty seat closest to the desk as she then sits down. "Hello, dad, I'm nurse Shelley." Ha, dad. "And this must be Lana..." Lana looks totally pissed off. She hates people who aren't friends and family. "So what's the matter with her?" With that Lana bursts out coughing as I rub her back.
"She's just really...ill. I'm not sure what her symptoms are, my wife has been up all night with her." With that the nurse makes an 'hmm' sound. I swear to god if we get referred to a paediatrician now I won't be happy, I asked for one but apparently they're all booked up. Sounds like a lot of kids are ill. "Do you mind if you can hold her out a little while I see what the problem is?" I nod my head as she rolls her chair opposite me and rolls up Lana's top.
Lana tries crawling up me. "No...come on." I whisper in her ear trying to settle her down. But Lana then decides to fucking scream in protest. Her scream is powerful until she has to cough...it hurts her so she just sobs hysterically instead. The woman hasn't even touched Lana's skin with the stethoscope yet. "Sorry..." I nervously laugh as I cradle Lana jogging up up and down.
"It's okay." The nurse says as she places the cold stethoscope on Lana's chest. I stay quiet for a minute, she then leans back after telling me to turn Lana over to check her back. I do so as she checks again. It's the longest minute ever. "So" the doctor smiles as a part of me sighs in relief that it's obviously nothing wrong with my daughter. "The good news is that she's going to recover very quickly, the bad news is that she is gonna need medicine, but I'll print you a prescription for that. She also needs to be at home in the warm. She has a chest infection as well as a nasty little cold. She'll wear herself out soon enough." Oh shit.
"So she's gonna be fine?" The nurse nods her head. "In mean time you need to give this one all the attention in the world." Fair enough.
"Let me just print out and sign a prescription..." I nod my head as the nurse does just that while I put Lana back into her pram and tie her into it.
Now to repeat everything the doctor just said to Kitty...
