EMMA CHAMBERLAIN
I wasn't mentally or emotionally prepared to call my parents. This possibility of Annie and I being twins was still eating me alive. The fact that we can't see a doctor without a parents signature really put a bump into our original plan. But maybe talking to my parents will be easier... right?
Annie and I laid underneath the covers of the hotel bed. Both her and I stared at my phone, my thumb hovering over my mom's contact name for about a full minute now. To be honest, I don't even know how I'm going to react. If she is my twin, great, she's the sweetest human being ever. But that also comes with all the lies and the hard truths. And if she isn't my twin, I'll be sad, but it still would be great because we look so similar.
"I'm literally shaking." I said, watching my hand twitch. Annie watched it too, but she placed her cold hand on mine to stop it.
"You got this, just press her name and ask." She replied calmly, probably hoping I would calm down. I nodded, quickly pressing my Mom's contact. My phone began to ring once I put it on speaker phone.
I looked over at Annie, my hand covering my mouth. My heart was pounding against my chest, just thinking about what the answer could be.
"Hi Emma! What's up?" My mother's cheery voice boomed through my phones speaker. Instantly my eyes darted to Annie whose eyes were wide open as well.
Trying to find my voice, I said "Hi Mom, I have a question." My stomach dropped, this was the moment of truth. Annie and I were going to find out if we were twins or not. If my mom even try's lying to me, I'll know. She's the worst liar, but I doubt she would lie in a situation like this.
"What's your question?" It sounded like she was digging in a drawer of some sort. A soft crunching noise appeared in the background.
Looking over at Annie again, she nodded, hinting for me to ask now. She was very impatient, I could tell.
I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath.
Here goes nothing.
"Mom, I'm sitting with the girl who won James's contest. Her names Annie... Annie Laken. And the reason I'm telling you this is because she looks exactly like me. Too much like me... and before you blurt anything out, I need to know the truth," I paused, taking another breath, my heart was literally beating out of my chest. "Is she my twin sister?"
The line was silent as if my mom wasn't there, as if she left. My whole body was shaking, I was an absolute anxious wreck. To think I would ever have to have a conversation like this with my mom.
"Mom?" I asked, seeing if she was still there.
I don't know if the silence was good or bad.
"I love you Emma, can you call your father please?" Is all she said before hanging up. My heart dropped, instantly knowing the answer, but not knowing why.
Looking over at Annie, she had tears in her eyes. I couldn't tell if they were happy tears or not. To be honest, I didn't know how I felt either. For my whole life I've had a secret twin sister that I didn't know about, that my parents didn't tell me about. I can't imagine how Annie's feeling. Knowing that my parents gave her away, that she's had to live with asshole parents that weren't even her biological parents her whole life. As hurt and confused as I am, I feel even worse for Annie.
"I don't know what to say." I confessed, leaning over and engulfing her in a hug. Annie instantly hugged back, letting out quiet sobs. My heart broke even more.
"Can- can we call your- my I don't know Dad please?" She was hurting. My mom's reaction to my question wasn't a good one at all. This wasn't fair, both of us need to hear exactly what happened.
