ANNIE LAKEN
"Emma, why are all your little kid pictures so bad?" Grayson yelled, wheezing from laughing so hard. He held a couple of Emma's pictures in his hands, cracking up at all of them. We were all doing the same thing, laughing at Emma's cringiness.
"Guys, guys, guys, look at this one." Ethan waved another picture, laughing to the point of tears rolling down his cheeks. My stomach hurt, laughing not only at the picture, but at everyone else laughing.
"I don't even know what was wrong with me." Emma answered, looking at the pictures that The twins were holding. Her eyes widened, screaming. "Oh my god, they are so bad." She snatched them out of their hands, throwing them to the side.
"Sister slay." James commented on one of Emma's Halloween costume pictures. We all looked over and began laughing more
"Mom, why did you have to get these out?" Emma groaned, trying to put them away.
I looked over at our mom, she was concentrated really hard on this one picture she was holding.
"Girls, look at this." She didn't look up once, waving Emma and I over. The two of us got up off the floor so we could go over by her. Once my eyes landed on the picture, my stomach dropped.
It was Emma and I as babies. We were smiling, laying on the ground in matching outfits.
"This was the last picture before you two got split up." She said as calm as possible. I know she was trying not to cry, and didn't want to freak us out. Surprisingly, I was taking it very well.
"We look almost identical." I commented, staring at our chubby faces. Ethan, Grayson, and James all stood up so they could check out the picture too.
"I know, we had to write your names on these onesies so we didn't mix you two up." She laughed, reminiscing.
I actually let out a laugh, Emma did too.. as If we were unconsciously accepting what happened to us.
"That's so sad, did your mom ever do that?" Emma looked up at Grayson and Ethan. They shook their heads, smiling.
"No, we didn't look this identical." Ethan answers for the two of them.
"Isn't it crazy? You both still look so similar." Mom commented, looking back and forth between Emma and I.
I smiled down at her, patting her shoulder. For some reason I felt good, happy. Seeing this picture made everything seem real. What happened to me wasn't my fault, I had no control over the situation. Also, my real parents had no control at all. There was nothing they could have done about it. They trusted my "parents" by giving them the most precious gift of life.
They ruined it though, stealing me away from them, my actual parents.
How could they?
Just thinking about my "parents" made me want to scream. Not only did I need answers, my actual parents needed answers, even Emma needed answers.
This whole situation isn't resolved yet. We only know one half of the story.
Being here, makes me feel safe. I've never felt safer in my life. My actual parents are kinder than the ones who've raised me. They haven't seen me in more than 16 years and they have made me feel so at home.
They also haven't pressured me which really makes me feel a hundred times better. They are gentle, kind, loving... my blood.
And Emma, oh my god Emma.
I've known Emma for a couple days now and I already love her like a sister. She is my sister, not even that, she's my twin.
She's my other half.
