ANNIE LAKEN
"We are up way too high." I barely leaned over the edge of the hot air ballon basket, looking down at the desert below us. The last fun surprise James, Emma, Grayson, and Ethan had for me.
As I looked down below me, I was in pure aw. The view was amazing, and being so high up made me feel like I was flying. We were up fairly high, a tiny knot in my stomach formed, but at the same time I was living for every second of it.
"This is awesome, I don't know why I never took you on one of these before." Laurie answered my comment first, looking down along beside me. It was really early in the morning, the sun making everything around us glow.
"Well now you have." I replied, leaning my head against her shoulder. It was now the next day, a better day let me just add that. Everything just sort of worked out, all the pieces fell into place. Now we're in a hot air balloon. My whole family.
"Sister Annie, come get in this picture." James said, making me turn around to see him, Ethan, Emma, and Grayson all set and ready to take a picture. Scurrying my way over, I leaned in next to Grayson and Emma, smiling widely as James took a few selfies of us.
After he lowered his phone, I looked over to Grayson who was already staring at me. Last night we had a long conversation about my childhood and what it was like growing up with Jim. He obviously heard me blow up on Jim, so I felt like it was needed for me to explain things.
"Can we take our own picture?" Grayson smiled, holding onto my waist. I was leaning in, smiling up at him as well. How did I get so lucky? He literally is the most precious human in the world.
"Of course, handsome." I watched as Grayson got out his phone, opening up his camera to take a few selfies with me. We took a few normal pictures, then some goofy ones.
"Send those to me, please." I said, looking down at his phone as he scrolled through our little photo shoot.
"Okay babe, I will." Once I heard the word babe, my stomach dropped, a faint blush slowly crawling up my cheeks. Even though Grayson and I weren't dating, it still felt like we were, it was quite nice.
"Get a room you two." Ethan gagged, watching us from the other side of the hot air balloon. He had his arm wrapped behind Emma, both of them leaning against the basket.
"Oh shut up, you get one." Grayson snapped back, his grip tightening around me. Their yelling caught Laurie, and my parents attention. My mom looked over at Emma and Ethan, then over at Grayson and I. A smile formed upon her lips.
"I knew there was something going on between you guys." She said, pointing her finger at the four of us. Smiles appeared on all of our faces, not knowing what to say.
"You boys better not hurt my daughters." Dad said, eyeballing Ethan and Grayson. I watched as both of them laughed, shaking their heads.
"You won't have to worry, sir." Grayson answered for the two of them. All three of my parents nodded, approving instantly.
"I wish I had a nice boy." James pouted, crossing his arms.
I stuck out my lip, looking over at James. "You deserve a nice boy." I really meant what I said. James is a great person, he needs someone just as great as him.
"Aw, thanks Annie." James smiled at me, sticking out his arms for a hug. Grayson let go of me so I could hug James. Engulfing him, I hugged him tightly.
"I want a hug." I heard Emma say. Peeking over James's shoulder, Emma began to shuffle over to us. Both James and I wrapped her in our hug.
"Group hug!" I shouted, queuing everyone to join. Soon I felt more bodies join, all of us hugging.
