Chapter Fourteen

I began to believe the fairy tales: You know how we’re all out there looking for our magical missing half.”[1]

Bryar stood ready again for her next dance. This time the edge of excitement that she had the first time died down but she did still feel a little nervous. She pulled her dress down a little. The second round was different because instead of dancing in pairs, you danced in a big group that was divided over the dances. There were fifteen other pairs dancing the Argentinean Tango and Bryar had made it her mission to stand out with her partner. They had set up the stage with barres in a special way creating a big open space in the middle but making short lines of the barres. Apparently the guys had set everything up and the girls just followed. Bryar also wondered where she was going to dance, which apparently also was decided by the guys.

Bryar slowly warmed up her muscles with her friends. They were all dancing this dance. Warming up was an important stage in a dancer’s preparation. She twisted, turned and softly pulled all her muscles to make sure that she wouldn’t strain her muscles while she danced. Suddenly someone walked towards all the girls and handed them a piece of paper. Bryar received hers and opened it, written on it was in big bold letters FIVE. Bryar looked puzzled at her piece of paper and then at Aoide’s, Carmina’s and Noa’s. Noa had eleven, Carmina had nine and Aoide had thirteen.

Suddenly the microphone crackled and Mr. VanderBilt’s voice drifted through the room.

“The girls who are shortly to dance have been given a number on a piece of paper. Will you girls be so kind to find your numbers on the barres and stand there?” Everyone moved at the same time, wondering where they were stood. Bryar found her spot soon enough; it was the closest barre to the centre stage. Carmina was also on the closest barre but then opposite of Bryar and Aoide and Noa were a row behind them and also in different places. Bryar folded the piece of paper and gave it back to a guy who was taking them in again. Now it was a question of just waiting for the guys to appear.

Bryar looked around the whole room wondering where they would come from. Suddenly they appeared out of different directions, their outfits matched exactly with what the girls wore. Bryar looked for a guy completely dressed in black, for that was also what she was wearing. Bryar’s scanned the crowd but soon she found out that everyone just blended in one. Nearly every girl had her partner already and Bryar started to get anxious.

Kind of just like with Kieran, she suddenly felt someone’s presence. The guy was completely in black with a black mask that covered his face and his dark locks falling over the mask a little. He radiated sex appeal and danger, which was of course perfect for this dance. His sight was set on something – someone. Suddenly Bryar noticed that he walked directly towards her.

All the girls looked envious towards her and her partner, Bryar was pretty shocked for her first dance was with Kieran and her second dance was with this guy. She decided that she must have a lucky streak. The guy slowly strolled towards her, with everyone’s gaze on them. Bryar couldn’t recognize him in the darkness of the room and the mask. She tried to look at his eyes but he looked away and stood behind her as she tried to turn, she felt his warm breath on her neck,

The lips of the guy moved towards her ear. A voice whispered something in her ear.

“Miss me Bryar?” Hearing his rich deep voice Bryar immediately knew who it was and when she finally could turn she looked at his eyes to confirm her suspicions. A pair of gold-like orbs stared right back at her. Finally Bryar understood what Jordan meant.
