Chapter Twenty-Six
“My heart is ever at your service.”[1]
Bryar awoke slowly. The first thing she could smell was chemicals and a strong soap powder. The first thing she saw were the bright lights above her. Very slowly, her mind seemed to be able to focus and she could make out where she was. There was an IV in her left arm and she was lying in a hospital bed with a breathing tube around her face. Her parents and Audra came rushing to her and they immediately started laughing and talking to her.
“We were so incredibly worried and we didn’t know what had happened. The doctors said that you must have fainted under stress and that caused your heart to collapse. That caused a lack of oxygen in your brain–” Bryar shook her head as if it would clarify everything.
“What?” Her mother spoke up as she sat next to her, stroking her hair.
“Oh sweetheart, you’ve had a near death experience. The doctors were able to get the oxygen to your brain just in time. You have been out for two days. We were all so worried…” Her mother continued but she wasn’t listening anymore. She could remember everything. Bryar knew that it was real. But she didn’t tell her parents about any of it, it was just better this way.
Apparently Morgan had an extremely rough patch, the cancer had attacked his liver viciously which had caused great numbers of more tumours to grow. He to go into immediate surgery to have the tumours taken out. Bryar knew that it was because of Jordan. He had been the one who had been haunting her past family members and he definitely knew where to hit her where it hurt the most. Then suddenly, the tumours were gone and Morgan’s health started to increase again. She knew that it was because of Kieran.
They had spent their two days in the hospital together. The doctors were first hesitant to put them together but when they noticed how much better they both became after seeing each other, they allowed it. Bryar had told Morgan everything what happened. At first she was scared because she thought that he might be weirded out. Once she was done, he hugged her close and whispered. “He’s gone and you’re with me. Just how things are supposed to be.”
On Friday, they returned back to the school. The doctors had told them that they were allowed to dance but not to push themselves too hard. When Bryar arrived, all the girls were waiting there for her with tears in their eyes. She just ran up to them as they hugged her tight. Everything at the school just carried on in its normal pace. Bryar felt a difference though, Kieran and Jordan were gone. The rumour spread that Jordan had moved to a different city to pursue his career of teaching instead of dancing, but Bryar just kept pretending that it was the truth.
That evening she lay in bed and found a letter tucked under her pillow. It was from Kieran, he had probably placed it there before he ‘died’. In the letter it fully explained everything that had been going on. Jordan casting a spell on the VanderBilt family, pretending he was their son just to come be close to her. His words were filled with love and longing that she felt a lone tear slide down her cheek. The last sentence he wrote was: I will always be thinking of you. Don’t forget me. Angels are never too distant to hear you.
In the weekend, Bryar and Morgan performed both the audience’s favourite dances which were the Latin and Technique. Bryar loved dancing, of course, but it did feel somehow a little off without Kieran or Jordan there. Once the Sunday night show was finished it started to dawn on Bryar, it was the end of the school year. The crowd went completely wild on their last evening and she couldn’t have asked for a better last performance.
