Chapter Five

The Heartless Dancer

In the holidays, all students received phoning privileges. They actually weren't allowed to have their cell phones but of course everyone did secretly. When they had to phone home they had to use the school telephone booth because otherwise all the teachers would know they had their mobiles. Bryar walked into the old telephone booth and phoned her parents first but they were both extremely busy and she only got a quick talk with them. They asked her if she was having a good time and if she has already made any friends – the usual parent talk. They promised her that they would definitely come to her first performance.

After that she phoned Audra and they talked about the school, if she had already made friends and of course the boys that go St. Vitus. After a good fifteen minutes Bryar's time was up so they said their good-byes. Bryar couldn't wait to see Audra again. Bryar left the telephone booth and walked to upstairs to meet up with Carmina, Noa and Aoide with whom she spent the rest of her day.

Bryar had almost done none of her homework in the holiday. She had spent time with her friends and talked to the boys and other classmates as well. Her last holiday day she had spent the whole day shopping with Carmina, Noa and Aoide. It was loads of fun. After they had completed their shopping spree, they had a nice little break in a café and went through all the things that they had bought and just talked.

When they arrived back at the school, it was about 5 o'clock. By the time they had finished their homework it was nearly 7 o'clock. They ended up finishing all of it on the last day. At 7 o'clock the bell went off, signalling that it was dinnertime. After dinner they sat and chatted in the common room with the boys. Because boys weren't allowed to go in the girls' rooms and vice versa the most convenient spot to meet up was the Common room.

They talked about their holidays: some of them went away to spend some time home with family or went on holiday somewhere else. When it was nine o'clock the Bed bell rang, signalling that they still had one hour left. Bryar went to the bathroom and cleaned her teeth. Back in their room she could get rid of her make-up and get dressed in her pyjamas. When all the girls were ready, they switched the lights off and lay in their beds. The second bell rang, so that meant that in about ten minutes the deputy would check up on them. The deputy was Mrs. Elodie Heartburn, she was about as ancient as the school building was. She was also very strict, if you didn't keep to the rules she would definitely let you know about it. Mr. VanderBilt would check up on the boys and he was very strict too.

After Mrs. Heartburn had come into their room – had seen that everything was to her satisfaction and had left – the girls grabbed their torches and all moved over to Carmina's bed. They sat on the bed and talked for a while about school and secretly ate some mints from Aoide. At half past eleven they decided to go to sleep because they had to wake up at seven again tomorrow.

The next day when school started, Bryar only wanted to stay in her bed. She wished that it still was holiday. But not even all the wishing in world could change that so she finally managed to get out of bed and get her uniform on. This time she decided to wear a simple white T-shirt with a blazer with the school emblem and a pair of dark denim jeans and high top black Converse. She applied her mascara and a little bit of eyeliner to make her eyes pop. After that she tied her hair back in a simple messy bun and walked down stairs to have breakfast.

She had the same muesli that she normally had and sat down next Noa. All the girls looked quite tired but nonetheless pristine. Bryar grabbed the book that lay on the table. It was one of the books that they had to read for English.

Bryar was reading the same book as Aoide, and Noa and Carmina both read a different one. By the end of the year they had to have read four books of their choice. Bryar had chosen Dirty Dancing the book. Because she knew the film by heart she didn't think it was going to be too hard. Normally Bryar would finish a book like that in no time but with for this book she had to write a seven-page report so she wanted to delay this until she had enough time to write the report.
