So I have been on Wattpad for a few years now. I'm on it almost everyday, it's like a drug to me. However, ever since I joined, I have seen the ups and downs of the fanfics and their specific fandoms/series, and Wattpad in general.
So what did I do...
So like I mentioned about two rants ago, I'm planning on closing this rant book out in about a few more rants. So we'll continue the countdown with Mo Dao Zu Shi, or Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. Also, if you're not familiar with this series (the novel or the adaptations), you're not gonna understand much. While I do mostly just stick to ranting about the fics and the fandom, there will be specks of spoilers in this rant while I do so to make my point, so proceed with caution.
Before I get into this rant, I just want to post the most hilarious panel from the manuha adaptation:

Anyway, it's been, what, two years since I got into Mo Dao Zu Shi? (As of the time writing this lmao)
And during that time, I have read a lot of fanfics. Like...an ungodly amount. Seriously, COVID lockdown was the most apt time to get into this series and the fandom 😂
Mostly of what I read on Ao3 is Wangxian and the usual pairings, some have been rare pairs. The ones with Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixuan as the rare pair are my absolute favorites cause of the amount of chaos it creates already.
And I know you wanna know/see what I think of the fics here on Wattpad, but here's the thing: I've tried, and I couldn't. I don't know why, but the fics on AO3 are significantly well formatted and well written than what I have seen on this site.
(also wattpad's filtering tags still fucking suck like mad, like good god, I've used AO3's tag filters to filter out the MPreg, A/B/O AND the Dead Dove: Do Not Eat fics, etc. Listen, I know the first two are incredibly popular fic tags/genres, they're....just not for me)
When I first got into this series, it was through The Untamed, or CQL, if you will (and Twitter played a big role in it tbh, it was literally everywhere). So I wasn't that interested in Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan's relationship development until the donguha. Imma be honest, I haven't rewatched CQL in a while but Xuanli were literally the most boring part of that adaptation.
(Which is fair, considering who the actual main characters are....but still, when their deaths have a massive impact on the main characters and the overall plot of the series going forward, you have to care about their relationship.)
The characters by themselves though are another whole episode because Jiang Yanli owns my heart in all of the adaptations
Speaking of characters, I have a love-hate relationship with Lan Xichen for a myriad of reasons. On one hand, he has good intentions and kind of an himbo. On the other, he, along with Lan Qiren, is a massive, self-righteous hypocrite.
Like I get being frustrated about your younger brother getting punished and going into grieving mode for thirteen years, but no way was Lan Xichen justified in calling Wei Wuxian "Lan Wangji's only mistake" when he had total power as a sect leader to stop half of all of the bullshit, he just didn't want to face his own mistakes on the matter (and also that Wangji made his decisions on his own accord, not because Wei Wuxian told him to), because it would mean acknowledging that he was, in theory, just as worse as Jin Guangyao and also ignorant to the actual issues, corruption and classism present in the cultivation world. Also, he was part of a siege that killed literal innocents. I really do wonder how he has the absolute gall to look at Lan Sizhui in the eye when he's part of the reason why Sizhui's entire bio family is gone.
