Chapter Nine - Helping Alexander
When I woke up I found that I was in a bed. The beeping noise made me jolt up and rip the needle from my arm.
Immediately someone came running in and I was relieved to see that it was Amelia.
"Finally, you're awake!" She yells causing me to grip my head.
"What do you mean finally?" I ask her.
"You've been out for four days." She tells me. "And since we cannot be apart and Light fae and Dark fae cannot be on each others territories, we've been recruited to go with Alexander to enforce the law as he reclaims his pack."
"We're going to be helping Alexander? What are we? The supernatural police?" I scoff.
She rolls her eyes and grins. "I know right?"
"I need junk food if I'm going to deal with this." I tell her seriously.
"Luck for you McDonald's is just across the street." She says, walking over to the door. "I'll be right back."
About ten seconds after she leaves, Alexander steps in and I look the other way.
I knew it was irrational for me to be hurt. He was nothing to me. Not even my friend. But I stood up for him. I got clawed for him. He was here because I told him about the rules. I got my mind split in two so I could convince the Circle of Four about his lineage.
He didn't ask me to do it but I did it anyway and what he said and how he said it still hurt me.
"Hailey." He says causing my eyes to tear up.
"Please leave Alexander." I say still looking away from him, hating the way my voice cracked.
I hear him take a deep breath and then he says the words. "I- I need you."
My head snaps to his, my eyebrows furrowed. "What?"
"Before I met you, I thought I came from nothing and I believed I was nothing. I was aimlessly trying to claw my way up and make a name for myself. A life, you know? But you believed in me, even before all of this. When you told me that I could get the position and you'd kick his ass for me, I held on to that. My wolf was so pissed off that you got hurt because I couldn't stand up to Jace. After that, I knew you were true to your word. In this short span of time you've given me so much Hailey. You don't even realise. You've given me a purpose, a real reason to fight." He moves to the far side of the room looking at his shoes. "You stood up for me. You helped me. Heck, Hailey, you've even given me my birthright. For the first time in my life I felt like I was good enough just as I am. Not because of what I've done or where I'm from or even because of any title I could possess."
I blink away the tears and move up a little gesturing for him to sit. He looks so uncomfortable but at the same time relieved that he is finally able to get out whatever he needs to say.
"Come here." I say, reaching my hand to him and after a moment he grasps it and sits down. He squeezes my hand and looks at my damaged arm. I can see this is a big deal for him - talking about his feelings - and I reckon after this that I'm probably never going to see this side of him again.
"When you tried to talk to me about my parents, I was caught off guard. I wasn't ready to hear what you had to say. In that moment I felt like that little kid abandoned on those steps again and I lashed out. I know it doesn't excuse what I did and said but I am really sorry Hailey, I didn't mean any of it. And I realise that it might be really, really selfish of me to ask you this but I need you Hailey. I still feel like that little kid and now I have to go get my parents from behind bars. What if they actually want nothing to do with me? I need you there with me Hailey. I need you to have my back. I don't think I can go through that kind of rejection again."
I wipe my eyes with the back of my hand that he isn't holding.
"Alexander." I say, but he has picked a spot on the floor and refuses to look at me. I sit up and use my free hand to cup his jaw. "Look at me."
When he does though, I feel the breath knock out of me. His hazel eyes look green with the unshed tears in them and it take me a minute to get my thoughts on track. He is so, so gorgeous.
"Alexander, you're strong and brave and kind." I tell him, watching as he closes his eyes. His tears starting to leak but I don't remove my hand from his jaw. I know he needs to hear this. "I know, that where we come from we didn't get a lot of the things we were supposed to as a kid. But Alexander, you see this?" I hold up my banged arm and watch as he opens his eyes to look at it.
"You're worth every claw mark. You're worth all the pain I suffered to pull that memory from my mind." I tell him, watching sadly as he begins to sob. "And Alexander, you're deserving of a family. And if all of this turns to shit, remember you have a family in Amelia and I."
By the end he breaks down completely and I pull him into my chest, letting him cry years and years of anger, sadness and frustration. My heart breaks for him. This is probably the words he needed to hear all his life. I hug him hard whispering that it's going to be okay.
Some people need a little more love and encouragement than others and there's nothing wrong with that.
When he pulls himself together, he places a gentle kiss to my forehead and I grip the front of his shirt, loving the way it feels. "Thank you."
I'm blushing up to my ears by the time he leaves to go get cleaned up and ready to go.
When I'm done eating I request a shower and a change of clothes. How many more hidden doors does this building have?
Then Amelia told me that we were getting our own private jet since Miss Black had to return back to the Academy to resume her duties. She was gone for much too long.
I was excited about the whole jet thing until I found out about the escort. Yes, you guessed it.
Experiment 005.
