Chapter Twelve - Tears
The vulnerability in Alexander's voice is evident and I find myself tearing up at the sound. Amelia pressed close to me as we hold our breath, waiting for the woman's reaction.
"Alexander?" The woman's voice wobbles but then I see Alexander stumble back slightly as the woman runs into his arms and sobs. "Oh, my boy."
She's so thin and dirty that I fear Alexander might break her but I'm proven wrong when he wraps his strong arms around her and they cry together.
My heart aches for him. Beside me Amelia sniffles a little and I throw my arm around her shoulder.
"Mary, what's going on?" A deep manly voice comes out from one of the cells.
"It's our boy!" She cries over and over, making no move to let go of Alexander.
Eventually part and Alexander goes to unlock his father. They hug and cry as well.
"Mom?"
Surprisingly the voice doesn't come from Alexander. My eyes widen.
"Just a moment Sierra." Mary calls and Alexander freezes. She takes the keys from him and unlocks another door.
A skinny girl falls into her mom's embrace, her dark hair long and matted. Even so, I can tell she's gorgeous.
Alexander finds her gaze and they find each other in an embrace, their parents joining it after.
I smile at the sight.
"What happened?" Greg asks. "How did you find us?"
Alexander's eyes find mine and I smile gently at him. I briefly wonder if he knows how beautiful he is. Even with the tears running down his face.
Before I know it, he is waking towards me. I run, meeting him halfway and jumping into his arms.
He cries into me and I squeeze. I Bury my face into his neck and breath him in. Neither of us say anything but we don't need to.
A throat being cleared interrupts our moment and Alexander sets me down.
When we turn to them, their eyes widen in surprise.
"Oh." Mary says.
I find myself looking down. It's the first time in my life that I feel ashamed of what I am. The first time I wish I was something else.
"A dark fae?" The question comes from his dad.
Suddenly I feel suffocated. I rip my hand out of Alexander's and make for the stairs.
"Hailey!" I hear though I can't make out who called me.
Once I'm outside and the fresh air hits my face I feel relieved. I was in my element. The bright leaves and blue sky made me feel calm.
"Are you okay?" Amelia sinks down next to me.
"Yeah." I say. "I just needed fresh air."
She sends me a look but says nothing.
Shortly after Alexander and his family comes out. I watch as they shield their eyes from the sun.
My eyes lock on Sierra who seem especially in awe with everything she's seeing. It makes me wonder whether she'd ever been outside in her life.
When her bare feet meets the grass and she stares at it weirdly I get my answer.
I nudge Amelia. "I don't think she's ever been outside."
