Chapter Seventeen - The Truth
I stare at her wide eyed, my brain not willing to comprehend what she is telling me.
"But we were born of the same womb." I tell her. "Surely you must have power. You can teleport and snap your fingers and make shit appear!"
"That's not how it works Hailey." She says patiently. "Angel power is strong. It cannot be split. Had I been born a year after I would have also inherited both mom and dad's power but because we shared a womb, the power could only go to one of us and it went to you"
"But you have power too, Athena!" I scream. "You have wings!"
"My powers are watered down because they all went to you. I got what was left." She explains. "As far as the wings go, all pure blood angels have them. They're usually a solid colour. That's how you can tell us apart from those who earned their wings or are merely strong enough to carry them. Yours will come when you embrace your power and accept who you are."
"How sure are you that I'm your sister?" I ask her.
"Come." She says and I once again follow her into the shimmering air.
We're standing infront of a large lake. Only it's the most beautiful lake I've ever seen. The water is an unnatural turquoise and almost completely transparent. I spot a green tail and I jump back as it darts out of the water and does a spin before doing back in.
"Is that a mermaid?" I blink.
"It is." Athena says grinning. "And this is the Lake of Truth."
"How does it work?" I ask her.
"You drop your blood, and ask what you want." She says. "This is how I found you were still alive."
"Give me a knife." I tell her.
She plucks one out of the air and I slice my palm, holding it over the lake. When my blood hits it, it begins to glow.
Hailey Fern, what is it you require?
I gasp as the voice sounds in my head.
"I want to know who my biological family is. Tell me who I am." I said aloud.
The glow begins to part and an imagine is shown to me.
I fall back as I see the same people I saw in the portraits.
You are daughter of fallen angels Lewis and Diana Fern. Twin sister of Athena fern. Heir to the Dark Fae Lands throne.
I fall to the grass and stare as the glow begins to fade. She was telling the truth. Angry tears blur my vision and I quickly blink them away.
Why is this happening to me? I didn't ask for any of this. I'm just an orphan. All I want is a simple life. Apparently that's too much to ask for.
"I'm sorry, Hailey." She says. "If I could do anything I would."
I look at her, we don't look identical but we definitely look enough alike that you could tell we are related. Atleast I know she isn't crazy.
She sinks down next to me and sigh as we watch the lake together.
"It's okay." I tell her.
"No it's not." She replies. I say nothing because she's right. Everything has been turning to shit and I didn't know what to do to stop it.
"Why should I do anything to help them, Athena? Why should I try to save them?" I ask her, never tearing my eyes away from the lake. "They're cruel and judgemental. They look down at our race. They mock us and belittle us. Why should I put my life on the line for such ungrateful people?"
