Chapter Sixteen - Queen Athena

When the plane landed I was nervous. More nervous than I have ever been in my entire life.

This was my species, my people, and I didn't know what to expect.

So little is actually known about the Dark Fae Lands and the Dark Fae themselves are elusive at best. After the war they kept to themselves. They rarely leave their land and they don't let anyone in, which is probably why people dislike us so much. They can't trust what they don't know.

And I can't believe everything I hear, so this is a chance to find out for myself.

I exit the plane and notice how I'm pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It's a never ending field as far as I can see. Pretty purple and blue flowers stretch on for miles and miles giving it a peaceful aura.

"You must be Hailey." I jump in fright at the voice. I swear I was alone a second ago.

I turn around quickly and see a pretty girl, with a sharp bob. Her eyes are big and round. She looks as old as I am, but the brown robes draped loosely on her body tells me that I shouldn't be so sure.

"I am." I say. "And you are?"

"Oh, how impolite of me. I'm Cara, your guide into the Dark Fae Lands." She laughs. It's light and melodious and I find myself utterly confused.

Aren't dark fae supposed to be miserable and rude and evil? This bubbly character seems everything but.

"Come on then." She says grabbing my arm. "It's rude to keep the Queen waiting."

She does something with her hand and the air infront of us ripples then she walks into it, and drags me along with her.

I blink, my eyes adjusting to the new environment. The first thing I notice is that the air feels different. Cleaner. More magical.

The second thing I notice is that we're standing infront of a huge castle.

I turn around and see the castle isn't surround by gates, but rather a luminous, colourful forest. The trees are strong and the leaves are bright. It almost feels alive.

A pink glowing butterfly flutters past me and I gasp.

"This is not at all what I expected." I tell Cara.

She laughs again. "Let me guess you expected a barren land with miserable people?"

"That scenario would at least have explained a few things." I nod.

She sighs. "Some people make up stories because the truth makes them uncomfortable."

I nod in understanding as she pushes back the large wooden door and we enter.

"Wow." I breathe. Everything about this place feels clean and right. Maybe I'm biased because I am a Dark Fae. Maybe my magic knows that it belongs here.

As we walk I notice that there is no one else around. "Where is everyone?" I ask her.

"The Queen gave everyone a break today." She says. "She didn't want to overwhelm you."

I furrow my brows wondering what could possibly overwhelm me here. These past few months of my life have been overwhelming. I am overwhelming.

We enter a large room with a super high ceiling. A chandelier made of wood, flowers and light hanging brilliantly above us.

I notice a figure sitting on an intricate wooden thrown and I bow low. This is my Queen.

"Your Majesty." I say. "Thank you for having me."
