Chapter Thirteen - Mate
Instead of the study, we end up on a podium infront of hundreds of werewolves. Greg was addressing the pack and he asked us to attend on behalf of the Embassy so here we were.
Whispers floated around the crowd.
What is a dark fae doing here?
What's going on?
Is this even legal?
I hold my head high, knowing it was going to be over soon.
"Silence!" Came Greg's booming voice and the crowd felt silent. In that moment it was easy to see why he was an Alpha. "As many of you know years ago, Jace managed to overthrow me and take over the pack. He kept me and my family locked up for years but thanks to Hailey." He says gesuring over to me and I step forward a little and whispers spread. "Our son, heir to the Alpha title has made his way back to us!"
Cheers ring through the crowd as Alexander steps up next to me and I immediately turn away from him to stand next to Amelia.
"Some of you may have forgotten but we also have a daughter who was two around the time of the attack. Sierra step forward." He announces.
Alexander reaches for her but she cowers behind me.
I take her hand and smile at her. Now that she's clean, her long light brown hair reaches below her butt and her green eyes are similar to Alexander's. "Chin up, Princess." I grin, stepping foward with her as the people clap. "These are your people."
She straightens and waves politely, cowering behind me when we step back.
When she tugs on my hand I turn to her. "Can I be your and Amelia's sister too?"
The whole crowd falls to a hush and I realise they've all heard her. She's crying, I notice and I pull her to me. "Oh, ofcourse you can."
Amelia joins in too and we all laugh, wiping at our tears.
A two year old child in the arms of the lady infront starts to cry and clutches at the front of the podium.
"I'm sorry." She says embrassed.
"That's okay." I smile, walking over and holding my arms out for the toddler.
"No. That's fine." She says. "Malachai doesn't go to anybod--."
Child leaps into my arms and I rock him as his cries immediately stop. "Hi Malachai." I coo as he tugs a piece of my hair before snuggling into me, promptly going to sleep.
I look around and notice that people are still staring.
I look at Greg who looks back at me and I realise he wants me to speak. I carefully hand the woman back her child and straighten myself out. Sierra comes to take hand again and look over the crowd.
"Jace is still out there." I say. "And he has a powerful fae protecting him called Brett. He will be coming back to finish what he started so you have to be vigilant and strong. The time has come for you to stand together as a pack, to protect your family, your territory, your Alpha family. I will speak to the Embassy and ask them to send reinforcements as well as a fae to rival Brett."
They clap but I raise my hand. "Please, that's not necessary. I'm just doing my job."
"How are you so nice?" Someone shouts out and I laugh.
"Surprisingly, dark fae are people too, much like any other species." I say lighthearted.
The laugh with me.
