Chapter Eighteen - I Have The Worst Luck

Athena rushes over to me. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah. I'm fine." I quickly get up. "I just need to get back."

"He knows you're alive now, Hailey." She says, gripping my shoulders. "He will hunt you down. You're not safe outside of this dimension."

"I know." I tell her. "And if I could stay here, I would but Brett is protecting an Alpha who is threatening my mate's pack. Now, I may not care about my mate, but his pack are good people and my best friend is there. If she dies, a part of me will die with her."

"What do you mean?" Athena asks suspiciously.

"We're bonded." I tell her.

"Well, why didn't you bring her with you?" Athena frowns.

"I didn't know how any of this was going to go and I most certainly didn't think it was going to go like this." I say. "Also how could I be sure light fae are accepted here unless I came myself first?"

"It's a light fae?" Athena gasps and I nod.

"Her name is Amelia." I smile. "She's great."

Athena nods thoughtful. "Very well, bring her. If father finds out about her, he will use her to lure you out."

My eyes widen in horror. The thought of anything happening to Amelia is enough to make me sick. I quickly pull Athena into an embrace. "Thank you."

She smiles at me. "This is your Kingdom too."

When we pull apart I notice everyone has dropped to their knees. "Please stand." I say very much uncomfortable with it.

How did I go from being treated like dirt to being bowed to? You see my life?

"I need to go." I tell her.

She nods. "Take Damien with you just in case. He is our finest warrior."

I'm about to object but she does her thing and shoves me through.

I'm standing in the field again, the pretty flowers staring at me mockingly. Damien appears a second later and I board the plane without waiting for him.

What was I supposed to say to him after I pressed myself to him like a stupid fangirl?

He follows and I quickly tell the driver I'm ready to go. We buckle up and the plane takes off.

I glance at Damien. It must be odd to fly container when you could easily just fly yourself.

Speaking of, his wings were nowhere in sight. It might be nice though. To be able to fly.

I think back to times I had a crappy day at the Academy and I wished I could fly away like some of the other fae I read about.

"My princess." He says. "Are you okay?"

I don't bother to correct him. I figure he'll never stop calling me that no matter what I say.

"I don't know." I tell him honestly. "I didn't think my life could get anymore messed up. Joke's on me, I guess."

"I know this must be alot for you to take in." He says.

I look out of the window then, watching the sky. How was I supposed to come to terms with any of this? It was madness. All of it.

"How am I supposed to save not only a pack, but entire species?" I ask him. "Yesterday I was just Hailey the orphan. Sure my life wasn't great but I was coping with it. Today, however, I'm Hailey Fern, heir to the Dark Fae Lands. What am I supposed to do with that? I don't have any idea how to be royalty."

"Did you just say heir?" He asks me but when I don't answer, he prompts. "Hailey."

"I was born first, apparently." I look at him. "I don't want to be a Queen, Damien! Being Hailey is difficult enough!"

He looks at me saddened. "You'd deny your people their rightful ruler?"

"You wouldn't understand. All your life, you've grown up in the Dark Fae Lands. This is normal for you." I close my eyes and tears start to fall. "I grew up in an orphanage, out here, where I was constantly treated like shit just because I'm a Dark Fae. Now I'm supposed to save all those people? I'm just supposed to take everything that's thrown at me and accept it?"

"I didn't know. I'm sorry, Your Highness." He says.

"Please, just call me Hailey." I tell him. "Look, I know things are getting bad right now. Supernatural beings are being murdered but I can't be the girl to save everyone, as much as I'd like everyone to be saved."

None of us say anything after that. What can we say anyway? Everything feels as if it's spiralling out of control and there is nothing anyone could do to stop it.

When the plan lands I feel better. The short nap that I took did wonders for me.

I can't say that was happy to be here though. I had enough to deal with. I didn't want to deal with Alexander right now.

Unfortunately for me though, he was the one waiting for us when we exited the plane. I have the worst luck.

His eyes immediately narrow on Damien.

"Hailey, we need to talk." He says. "Alone."

"There is nothing to talk about, Alexander." My eyes flash but I continue walking.

"So you're just going to walk away from me then?" He says. "If this is about Beatrice, then I'm not with her anymore."

I ignore him.

"Hailey!" He screams. "You're my fucking mate!"

Oh wow. How convenient that I'm his mate now, after finding out that the girl he slept with is pregnant with another man's child.

Before I can react a sickening snap rings in my ear and I turn around. Alexander is holding his bloody nose and Damien is standing over him.

"Speak to her like that again and I will end you." Damien spits. I notice how he subtly flexes his shoulders as if his wings are itching to burst through.

That's hot.

"Damien, come on. He's not worth it." I call to him. "I need to find Amelia."

With one last withering look towards Alexander he turns and walks with me.

"That guy is an asshole." He quips.

I laugh wholeheartedly.

"Yeah, he is."
