Chapter 15 ~ Rowan

I walked up the stairs to the front door. I had so much to tell Ashley!

But as I opened the door I could feel nervousness and guilt gnawing at my heart. I had blown it at Asa's house. I couldn't force down another sandwich, and I was sure Asa's mum had figured it out. I took a deep breath, and sighed.

"Rowan, is that you?" Mom asked from the kitchen. I slid off my shoes and placed them on the mat.

"Yup!" I said, crossing the carpeted floor. I walked into the kitchen.

"So? How was your first day of school?" Mom asked, as I suspected she would.

"Actually better than expected! I made a bunch of friends, and most of the teachers are nice." I said, leaning against the wall.

"Are the friends, well, nice?" Mom asked, looking up from the sink.

"Well, yeah, otherwise I wouldn't really be friends with them," I said and mom chuckled. "First I met Ashley, and then she introduced me to Jenna, Cara and Lucy." I said. I didn't mention Kenzie, because there really was no point.

"That's really great Rowan! And Asa helped with your. homework? He's such a sweet boy. Well, dinner will be ready soon." Mom said, too busy with cooking to wait for my reply. I nodded slowly and walked off.

Dinner. It was the hardest meal of the day. The one that was hardest to get out of.

I sat down at the table in the dining room just as mom called down Kayla and Mikey.

"Oh hey sis. How was it?" Kayla asked, sliding into me. Suddenly, the morning's events came flooding back. Shoot. I would have to eat dinner. I had no choice.

"Actually it was really good. I made a bunch of friends. AND they're actually quite popular." I said proudly.

"Oh, I see we have a popular girl in the family." Kayla said, laughing. "Are they a bunch of stuck up snobs?"

"Nope. They're super nice." I said.

"Well that's good." Kayla said, putting a spoonful of rice on her plate.

"What about you?" I asked, taking a few pieces of broccoli and placed them on mine.

"Good. Haven't made much friends yet but the teachers are nice. Not used to all the British accents though..." Kayla admitted as the rest of the family sat down.

"More about school in your beds." Mom said and she began the blessing. I opened my eyes and sighed inwardly.

I had no choice but to eat. By the end of dinner I had eaten three tablespoons of food, and I felt disgusting. But Kayla looked satisfied.

I told everyone I was tired and that I was going to bed, and I headed off upstairs. As soon as I was safely seated in the laundry room with complete privacy, I called Ash.

"Hey Ashley! It's Rowan! Gosh I have SO much to tell you."

"You do? Aaaa! I can't believe it Rowan. I'm so excited for you. Wait right here, I need to grab my notebook. Believe it or not I keep a notebook and write my case files in them." Ashley said, laughing. I smiled, and laughed so she could hear that I found it funny. A few seconds later she was back.

"Kay, all ready. Go ahead!" And so I started talking. Fifteen minutes later I had finished talking and Ashley sighed.

"Woah girl! This is CRAAAAAZY! I can't believe it! I'm 100% sure he likes you. If he doesn't ask you out soon, I swear I'll freak. Well, I have to go. Goodnight bestie!" Ashley said energetically. I smiled to myself. Too bad for Kenzie. It wasn't my fault

"Goodnight Ash..." I said happily, and she hung up. I stood up awkwardly and stretched. Then I placed my phone in a dry place and hopped into the shower, trying to ignore the fact that my stomach was insanely bloated.

"Hey Row? What's are the names of your new friends?" Kayla asked as she put her hair into a messy bun for the night.

"Ashley, Jenna, Cara, Lucy and kinda Kenzie."

"Kinda Kenzie?"

"Well we don't exactly like each other but she's in the group so I don't know." I explained.

"Aaah..I see. What's Ashley's last name?"

"Tomson. Why?"

"Knew it. She's got a sister my age. If Ashley is as nice as you say, Alison must be her completel opposite. She's a b****." Kayla said angrily, and I jumped at her sudden violent language.

"What did she do to you?" I asked and Kayla looked up at me.

"She didn't-" Kayla started but she saw my disbelieving look.

"She was just rude. Better cuz she's from New York and all. Made up a bunch of lies about Michigan and everyone believed her. She told everyone that we all look like pigs in the state." Kayla said, biting her lip.

"What? But you're so pretty!" I protested. Kayla shrugged.

"Whatever. It doesn't matter. Just, be careful with Ashley. You never know." Kayla said, and put her cover all the way to her chin. I nodded, turned off the lights and got in bed. I flipped onto my side and closed my eyes. Kayla hadn't brought up the morning! Yes!

"Hey Rowan?" She asked. I felt everything inside me crumble. This was it. I was gonna die.

"Yes?" I said, pretending to be super sleepy, hoping she would forget it.

"About today...look I'm not gonna tell mom. I was just, worried. You're my sis! I don't want you to get hurt...and I'm scared. You've always been skinny, but when you changed in front of me the night we went to Jackie's I noticed that you lost some weight. And you not eating. Rowan not eating doesn't help, it just ruins your future. If you want to lose weight, which you don't need to, talk to me and we'll find healthy ways. Please, do it for me?" Kayla pleaded. Oh my goodness. She didn't tell mom? I WAS GONNA LIVE! And it would be easy to keep Kayla's promise. It was a known fact in the Spark's family that I did not enjoy eating breakfast. I just ate as little as possible for lunch, if some at all, and then dinner. She would nevr know.

"I promise Kayla. Oh, and remind me in the morning, I owe you ten pounds." I smiled in the dark.

"Wa, wait WHAT? Did he like, what???!!!"

"Haha don't worry. But you're right. And all my friends seem to think so. And today at lunch he asked me to go outside to talk, and all his friends were watching intently. And you know how I came home late? I was at his house. He helped me with my homework and we went on the trampoline."

"Awww he's such a sweetheart! I sure hope he asks you out Rowan."

"Thanks Kayla. Goodnight."

"Goodnight."

I turned back on my side. Phew. I was saved! I could do this! I was a fighter, and I did not give up!

I smiled at the wall. Today had not been as bad as I thought it would be.

Not bad at all.
