Chapter 1 ~ Rowan

"Wake up sleepyhead!!" A familiar voice cooed. I blinked my eyes to clear my vision and saw mom and dad walking into the room with Kayla at their side.

"Oh um..hi." I said sleepily. What was all the commotion about?? Then Aunt Carrie appeared holding a big, vanilla cake with sugar roses on top. Right. It was my birthday.

"Happy birthday to you.." They started to sing the familiar chant, and I sat there not very sure how to react. Unlike other people, I wan't very fond of my birthday. It was just a day to get stupid presents and eat cake that made you fat. Money couldn't buy the thing, or rather, the person I wanted.

I glanced around my room, looking for a hair brush.I could see my reflection in the mirror, and I wasn't sure if I liked what I saw.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROWAN!" Mikey shouted, jumping out from behind dad and falling into my bed. I smiled at him and he smiled back, brown eyes twinkling.

Mom handed over the cake and I placed it on my lap.

"Make a wish sweetie." She said, and I tried not to roll my eyes. How many times did I tell her not to call me that? At least 300.

I shut my eyes and hovered above the lit candles. My family waited in silence.

Please please please please let it happen. It's all I ever wanted. I don't need presents or cake or money. Just please..

I let out a gust of air and all the candles went out.

"No boyfriends for you!!" Mikey teased, referring to some stupid tale he heard in school. The amount if candles you didn't blow in the first try was the amount of boyfriends you would have.

"I had three girlfriends!" He boasted.

"That's because you are a bad candle blower." I said angrily. I didn't need 3 boyfriends. I wanted one.

"Whadya wish for sis?" Kayla asked. I looked up at my older sister.

"I can't tell you or it won't come true." I said with a smile. She rolled her eyes.

"Well we'll leave you alone now so you can get ready. We don't want you to be late on your birthday." Dad said and they all floated out of my room. Good.

I got up and opened my window. The sky was a clear blue, cloudless. On any other day I would've enjoyed the nice weather, but my mood ruined it. Why couldn't things go right, just once?? Why did everything always turn against me?? I sighed and opened my closet. Maybe a nice outfit would brighten my day.

I slipped on a gray tank top and my favorite patterned blue, orange and white sweater. My favorite jeans went on my legs and old, slightly worn out high tops ended on my feet. Now for my hair.

I grabbed my hair brush and brushed through my messy auburn ringlets and pinned back the front with a white hair bow. Then I rushed out the door and down to the kitchen. A slice of cake was sitting on a plate. I sat down and reached for a fork. I took a bite of the cake. Sweet. Too sweet. Too much sugar, too much calories. I squashed the cake so it looked like I ate some of it, and when no one was watching, dumped the slice into the garbage can.

"Rowan, we were thinking, we'll give you your other presents after school, for now here is the first one." Mom handed me a blue box with a silver ribbon. I opened it up to see a beautiful Silver necklace with my name on it.

"Thanks!" I sad. It wasn't him, obviously, but it was still nice. I put it on and got up.

"I'm off. Don't want to miss the bus!" I said, and winced at my fake cheeriness. Sure, the necklace was pretty, but it didn't change anything. I got up and grabbed my bag from the hall. "See you!" Everyone called. I opened the door and rushed out.

The bus. Pshhh. I would run to school, to burn all the stupid cake calories. I slipped my earphones into my ears and rushed off. I went to school the long way. By the time I got there, the bus was puffing into the parking lot. I stopped to take a deep breath.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY FRIEND!!" I heard Abby shout. I swiveled around to face her. She was holding a box. I opened it to find a picture album. It was full of pictures of the three of us, from when were like, three to now.

"After all, sixteen is a big number!" Jenny said. I smiled weekly. I was sixteen. So much responsibilities. How would I handle it??

The bell rang.

"We better get to class!" I said. I wanted to escape all talk about my birthday wish.

Jenny went off the math class while Abby and I walked to Science

"Wished for him again, huh?" She whispered as we pushed through the crowded hallway.

"What?" I pretended not to know what she was talking about.

"The blue eyed one. You know, stop faking." She said and nudged me playfully.

"Oh...no." I said quickly. Stupid Abby. Now it would never come true. No wonder it never happened.

"Of course." She said with a smile as we walked into the classroom. I ignored her, and walked over to my desk. Then class began and I forgot about everything for some time.
