Chapter 10 ~ Rowan
I walked into the office and sat down on an empty plastic blue chair. A woman that looked to be in her 50's looked up at me. Her hair was put into a fancy 1950's hairstyle, and her nails were painted a bright blue.
"Yes hun? What can I help you with?" She asked, taking a break from typing.
"Uhm, I'm the new student from Michigan.." I began.
"Oh you must be Rowan! Well honey, here's your timetable. I'm sure you'll meet someone that will help you around soon! Do you need any other information?" She said, smiling. I took the timetable from her hand and thought for a second.
"Oh, yeah. Do I get a P.E uniform or do I have to buy one?" I asked.
"P.E?? Oh yes. Don't worry, I'll tell the teacher you need one. What's your size hun?" She asked. I felt a bead of sweat drip down my back.
"Uhm, uh, large? I'm not sure." I stuttered. The secretary raised an eyebrow.
"I think you're a small Rowan! If not extra! I'll tell Ms. Peters and you'll have one in time for gym. Now head off to class sweetie!" She said. Me? A small? Unbelievable. I walked out of the room and started down the hallway. I was gonna completely embarrass myself when I walked into class late. I could feel sweat starting to form on the back of my neck and my hands started shaking. I turned the corner and bumped straight into someone.
"Oh I'm so sorry, I reall-" I began.
"Rowan?? Hey! I was looking for you. I've been waiting. I don't want you to go to class alone." Asa said. I looked up into his eyes.
"Oh thanks so much." I said.
"No problem. Did Mrs. Wilson give you a hard time about your gym uniform? Don't worry about it, she always tells Ms. Peters one size too big." He explained as we walked down the hallway. I raised an eyebrow, confused.
"She said I was a small." I said, waiting for his reply. I knew he would say I was large.
"You see? I told you! She always exaggerates! You're an extra small. Unless you like loose clothes, then small would be good for you." He said. I felt my heart start pounding. What was everyone talking about?? I was a large!
"Um, yeah whatever. What class do you have?" I asked, changing the topic. He snatched my timetable and checked what class I had.
"English. Perfect! Most of our classes are together! Except for Spanish and Maths. I take German instead and have an advanced level in maths (A/N: Guys I'm making this all up I have no idea what Asa is like in math, or if he takes German probably not lol ok sorry idk)" He said. I nodded. That was good. I would have someone to talk to in nearly every class.
"Okay, here it is. Get ready, she's kinda strict." He said, knocking and opening the door. A blond woman who looked to be around 30 something, looked at him and raised an eyebrow through her black rimmed glasses.
"Mr. Butterfield, I thought we talked about being tardy. We are not on set, we are in school. Now get in your seat and stop making everything so full of drama. We are not in one of your movies." She said. Asa hung his head, and I felt my heart turn into a knot. The class snickered.
"Oh and whose this?" Ms. Davis asked, eyeing me up and down.
"This is Rowan. I helped her get to class, that's why I'm late." Asa quickly explained. Ms. Davis nodded her head.
"Ahhh I see. I'll keep this off your record but one more time and lunch detention for a week." Ms. Davis said, and I saw Asa's chest rise and fall. He was sighing. He slumped to his chair and slid down.
"So, Rowan. How about you introduce yourself. And full sentences, this is English class." More snickers. Was this some kind of British humor I didn't understand? It didn't seem funny to me. More like hurtful.
"Well, my name is Rowan Sparks. I just moved here from Michigan. I like to run and bike. I would like to work in the fashion industry and I like animals. My birthday was just last week." I said briefly.
"Anymore facts? Favorite color? Food? Movie?" Ms. Davis asked. I felt my heart stop when she said food. I could answer the other two easily, including one that would make the class laugh. I would have to make one answer up.
"My favorite color is either blue or green. I like peaches a lot. And I think for the movie I would have to go with Enders Game." I said, shooting a glance towards Asa. Everyone started laughing and Asa stood up, pretending to bow. I smiled. Peaches were a good pick. Low calories, healthy and sweet. One of the very few foods I actually still liked.
"Thank you for that Rowan. The only seat free is next to the troublemaker, I hope you don't mind." Ms. Davis said, gesturing. Asa leaned back and crossed his arms, smirking. I felt my insides melt.
"I don't mind." I said, earning a few 'oohs' from some boys. I rolled my eyes and sat down next to Asa.
"Well class, please get your writing notebooks. Open your english book to page 138 and please answer all the questions and write a short summary." The teacher said, and clicked back to her seat on her heels. I looked at Asa. He smiled at me and then started working. I took the book in front of me and started reading, when all of a sudden a little paper ball landed on my desk. I looked around and saw Asa quickly look down.
[Hey, sorry about her. She's a pain. But I think she likes you. Don't worry, you'll get used to her.]
The note said. I grabbed my pencil and scribbled back an answer.
{No it's not a big deal. What's up between the two of you? She seems to hate you!}
I balled the paper into my hand and ran my hand through my hair, dropping the ball on the floor. Immediately, Asa dropped his pencil, swooped down, grabbed both things and sat up straight.
"Everything okay back there Butterfield?" Ms. Davisasked, turning from her blackboard and raising an eyebrow.
"Yup! Just dropped my pencil!" Asa said. I was the only one who noticed that his hand was formed into a fist. I watched him carefully as he scribbled a reply, got up and went to the trashcan to sharpen his pencil. The note dropped down, and he went back to his seat. I counted to 20 before standing up. I pretended to accidentaly drop my pencil while sharpening it, and I reached for the paper. Then I sat down at my desk.
[Kinda got on the wrong side at the beginning of the year. How about I tell you later? This is too risky. This woman has eyes in the back of her head.]
I slipped the paper into my pocket and looked at Asa. He shot me a smile and I did too, and then I went back to my work.
"Well, class, that's it for today. For homework do the same, but page 142. Remember, reports are due next class. Rowan, you are excused from this assignment." Ms. Davis explained and some of the class groaned. I gathered my things and walked out of the class, waiting for Asa. We had biology next.
"Hey Rowan. So, about Davis. I'm a class clown. I like making people laugh, you know? Well she didn't tolerate that. Nothing major, I would just crack a joke once in a while. I've been sent to the headmaster twice this year. But my mum doesn't mind. She gets it. Everyone knows Davis doesn't like people that fool around, but she can joke around as much as she wants. I think the only reason she didn't get mad at your Enders Game joke was because, well it was kind of directed towards, erm, me. But whatever. So, biology! Let's go! This guy is a hundred and one times better than Davis." Asa grabbed my hands and pulled me down the hall.
Yay!! I've written the next few chapters beforehand so look up for quick updated!! Hope you like this chapter as much as I do! Follow, comment and vote!
