Chapter 32 ~ Rowan

"Rowan! Asa's here." Mom yelled. I sighed at my reflection and clicked mg other earring shut.

"Coming!" I called back, slipping on my other ankle boot. Then I grabbed my phone and slid it into the pocket of my gray skinny jeans.

"Hey." I said breathlessy, jumping off the last step.

Asa smiled, and I noticed the way he looked me up and down from the corner of his eye. Self conciously I snatched my leather jacket off the coat hunger and threw it over my blue and black flannel. Then I kissed mom's cheek quickly and opened the door.

"Have fun you two. Be back by eleven." Mom said.

"She'll be here, safe and sound Mrs. Sparks." Asa assured her, flashing one of those picture perfect smiles, and then I dragged him out of the house. Once outside, he intertwined his fingers with mine.

"I can't believe you told her we're going to the movies." Asa laughed, his breath a foggy cloud in the frosty December air. I smiled.

"A girls gotta do what she gotta do. Mom wouldn't let me go otherwise." I admitted.

"I see. Don't worry, it'll be fun." He said, as we headed towards the nearest subway station. I hadn't been at a party for ages, and frankly I was nervous as to what to expect.

* * *
Music blasted out of the windows of a large empty house in front of house. It had taken about 40 minutes to get here, and I could see why everyone thought this was the best party place. Secluded from any neighborhood, the house was located in the middle of small forest. There were no cars, and apparently Adam's parents were out of town a lot. No wonder he was so popular.

"You ready?" Asa asked. I took a deep breath and felt him squeeze my hand.

"Mhm." I said quietly, and we headed towards the big front door. Asa didn't hesitate to open it without knocking, and as soon as he did, I nearly fell over from impact. The music was so loud it made my ears hurt, and there was so many people. Surely, many of them were not from school. Everyone was so close together, bodies moving to the music. It made me feel awfully uncomfortable. But I promised myself that I would try to enjoy it.

"Do you want something to...um." Asa paused.

"Eat. And drink." I smiled quickly, and a grin spread across his face. "Stay right here." He said, and headed in the direction I was facing. He seemed to know everything was. I leaned back against the wall and watched people, trying to figure out who I knew from school.

"Here." Asa said, and I jumped, surprised by his sudden appearance. He laughed.

"Ooh thanks." I said, taking a chocolate covered biscuit. The voice in my head was screaming, but I just let my breath out my nose and took a bite, trying to drown it out.

"Drinks are somewhere else. Do you wanna stay here or come with me or something?" Asa asked, running a hand through his hair. He looked nervous, shy. I cocked my eyebrow at him, but he didn't seem to notice.

"I'll stay here." I said. The thought of pushing through the hot messy crowd wasn't appealing.

"Okay." He said, and quickly walked away. I watched him, concerned as to what could possibly be bothering him. Getting warmer by the minute, I took of my jacket and placed it on my arm. I continued to look around, and started feeling a nauseous feeling in my stomach. There was so many girls, so many pretty, thin girls. Long straight hair, tan skin, tight clothes. They were all so much better than me. Why did Asa choose a monster like ME? I held the cookie in my hand, and decided to let it fall to the ground. The place looked like a pig sty anyway.
