Chapter 13 ~ Rowan
I sat down at the lunch table. Not eating was not an option, especially after the incident at P.E. I had promised Ash I would be her lunch buddy and buy salads so she wouldn't feel left out as everyone else ate the full meals. It was a perfect opportunity.
"So why did you move here?" Lucy asked me, taking a bite of her pizza.
"My dad had a job transfer." I explained, taking a sip of the freezing water.
"Did you have a boyfriend back in Michigan?" Jenna asked. I laughed.
"You wish! All the guys at home, or at least my old home, are SO ugly. These British boys are so much better." I said, smiling. Ashley spit out a lettuce leaf. Calories
"I agree!!" She raised her hand energetically and everyone laughed.
"Found anyone you like yet?" Cara asked me. I started fiddling with the edge of my blazer.
"Don't tell anyone, but I think Asa has a thing for her..." Ashley whispered, leaning towards all of us. The other girls gasped.
"Are you serious? THE Mr. Butterfield himself? Payton was nominated luckiest girl of the year by all of us. I mean who gets to date such an amazing guy!? Are you into him?" Lucy asked. I blushed.
"Well, why not? I've been an Asanator as long as I can remember." I said sheepishly. Cara choked on some water.
"Asanator?" They all looked at me, confused.
"Have you guys never hears the term before? It's a fan name. Like, there's beliebers, swifties, smilers, little mixers, directioners-"
"That's me!" Ashley said, grinning. I smiled.
"And then there's Asantors. Kinda stupid since we're going to school together. I mean, that's probably why none of you ever heard the term before." I shrugged to myself.
"Gotta go to the bathroom. Be right back." Ashley said. Kenzie scooted over to me.
"Hey listen here. Ash is my best friend. I'm not gonna let you take her away from me. If you do, you're in big trouble." She hissed. I felt something twist inside me. I had just made friends. No way was I letting this psycho girl get in my way of happiness.
"Listen here Kenzie. What if Ash ditches you for me? Then what?" I looked her in her eyes. They were a stony blue, harsh and cold, different than Asa's warm, welcoming ones.
"Then we'll see. But she would never do that. Oh and just know if you want to try me, I know more about you then you think. My sister got diagnosed with anorexia last year and I know the difference between being naturally thin and being anorexic. Watch it, Sparks." Kenzie slid off the bench and got up to throw her plate away. Ashley returned just as I was starting to get sweaty. My breath was getting faster. Shoot. What if I had a panic attack right here in the middle of the cafeteria, on my first day of school. Meet Rowan Sparks everyone.
"Hey Rowan, you know how I said I kinda have a boyfriend? That's him over here. Scott McDonnel. He's perfect, isn't he? I didn't like him at first but then he asked me to the school dance last year. I went and a week later I started crushing on him. He shows all the signs. He's gonna ask me out, someday soon, I swear." Ashley said. She looked so innocent, like a little puppy. I sure hoped he would. He was good looking. But not nearly as perfect as Asa.
"Speaking of Prince Charming, here comes Butterfield." Jenna said, chewing on her milk straw. Ashley looked at me and squealed. I smiled.
"Hey, um, Rowan? Mind if we go outside?" He asked, coughing nervously. Ashley tried not to look at me, but I could see she was raising both eyebrows and her lips were pursed. Jenna was nervously biting the straw, and Lucy looked like she was going to faint while Cara was shaking with silent laughter.
"Yeah, sure." I said, standing up. Jenna shot me a little thumbs up sign and I smiled as I followed him to the doors that led to the courtyard. I could feel someone staring at me, and I noticed a bunch of boys from Asa's table watching intently. The turned away quickly when I caught them. I looked down, flustered.
"Sorry. Um about, interrupting. I see you've made some friends?" Asa asked as we headed to the track to walk. I glanced at the people playing on the soccer field.
"Yeah."
"That's a big hit. Ashely isn't one to talk to new people, unless she has a good reason."
"She does." I said quickly. Why did I say that, I thought to myself.
Please don't ask, please don't ask, please don't.
"What is it?" He asked. I sighed inwardly.
"Um...a, well, um, a..." I stuttered. He laughed.
"Girl stuff. I get it. Don't worry. Hey so I wanted to ask you something." I felt my breath quicken. Omg. Was he gonna ask me, to, you know?
"Yeah?"
"I was thinking you could come over today....I could help you with your homework and we could just talk." Asa said. I breathed out slowly.
"So like, a date?" I asked, smiling slightly.
"Hahaha no, of course not. Just friend to friend." Asa said. It sounded more like he was assuring himself than me.
"I'm glad you made friends." He added.
"Same. They're really nice, it's just that Kenzie is kind of attached and she threatened me if I ever stole Ashley away." I explained.
"Oh don't worry, Kenzie's all talk. She's always been kind of hard on newcomers, plus she's known Ash the longest. But the other girls are nice. I'm glad they welcomed you, they're cool. Much better than those snobby popular girls you see in movies." Asa said.
"Yeah, it's just that, Kenzie has something to use against me but whatever." I said before I could stop myself. WHY was I doing this? As if I couldn't control my own tongue.
"What is-" Asa began.
"Oh there's the bell! Can't wait for after school!" I said excitedly, and ran off, waving. I had so much too Ashley!
"Guys! You won't believe it!" I exclaimed, running up to the group of girls.
"Yeah?" Jenna asked. They all looked at me, eyes wide. I rushed into my report and told them everything, except for the thing about Kenzie, who happened to be listening from the side.
"This is amazing!! He TOTALLY likes you!" Ashley said.
"And he also said you guys are cool." I threw in. Ashley flipped a curl back, as if to say 'I'm fabulous' and we all laughed
"Wow you lucky girl!" Lucy said, sighing.
"Lucy, you um?"
"Yeah I like him. I admit! But if he asks you out, I won't be mad. In fact, I'll be happy! Getting jealous wouldn't be a very friendly thing to do." Lucy said, throwing an arm around me. I smiled at her and glanced at Kenzie, who had heard the whole thing. She was glaring at the both of us, so I quickly turned around.
"Well, time to get to class. Come on Rowan, we can sit together!" Cara, who was in my math class, said. I smiled, and we walked arms around one another, down the hallway to class.
All my worries from the morning had completely vanished.
QOTD: Whose your favorite new friend of Rowan's? Ashley, Jenna, Cara, Lucy, or maybe even Kenzie? Mine is definitely Ashley, I LOVE her character!
