Chapter 7

Chapter 7 ~ Asa

I couldn't stop thinking about Rowan.

As I ate my breakfast that morning, she was the only thing on my mind. Or should I say person? I glanced at my watch. 3:00 o'clock was so far away. I stood up and went to the living room, where Loxie was playing with her barbies. I plopped down on the couch and grabbed the remote. I flipped through the channels, bored as heck. Accidentally, I stopped on a movie with a kissing scene. My mind flashed with pictures of yesterday.

"Eeeew!! Asa change it!" Loxie screeched. I rolled my eyes.

"Stop it Loxie." I said.

"It's gross. Help me!" She whined, handing me her barbie. I buttoned the doll's jacket, examining her. Why did all Barbie's have blue eyes? What about sparkling brown?

"STOP!" Loxie screamed as I flicked though more channels. A princess movie was playing, and surprise surprise, she had long blond hair. What happened to auburn curls? I slapped myself inwardly. I couldn't get Rowan out of my head. Sighing, I looked up at the clock above the TV, There were still about two hours till three. I rested my head on the sofa pillow and took a short nap.

My nap was a bit longer than expected, because I woke up at 2:45. Shoot. I ran to my room and combed my hair. Still didn't look presentable. In a rush, I slid on some skinny jeans, a loose grey T-shirt, and a dark blazer. Then I ran downstairs.

"Mum? I'm going to hang out with...friends." I hesitated. Her voice came from the living room.

"Okay! Stay safe and be back before 8:00!" She said. I rolled my eyes. I was 17.

"I will!" I said, choosing a pair out of my many shoes.

"Bye Asa!" Loxie shouted.

"Bye!" I shouted, shutting the door. Loxie and Mum seemed to be the only ones around lately. I really needed to get out of the house on these occasions. I walked to Jackie's and rested against the wall. Rowan wasn't there. I waited for 20 minutes, checking my phone, watching people and playing with my watch, and she still didn't come.

I didn't want to make her feel stupid so I texted her saying,

- Hey...I thought I might need your address for the future... She replied quickly, but didn't say a word about coming late. I sighed and decided to head to her house. It didn't take long from Jackie's, but suddenly I wanted to be back at home on the couch watching Loxie and her stereotypical barbie movies. Terrified and slightly shaking, I knocked on the door. Rowan's sister opened. She had her long blond hair in a messy bun, and was wearing a faded pink sweater. Despite the chilly November weather, she was wearing shorts. I wondered if where they were from that was acceptable. In London any sane person would be freezing.

"Asa, right? I'm guessing you're here for Rowan?" She asked, eyeing me. I nodded, trying not to blush.

"Yeah..." I said sheepishly. She smiled to herself.

"Knew it." She mumbled, and turned around. The house looked awfully cosy from where I was standing. The stairs and floor were covered in creamy floor carpeting and the walls were a warm pale yellow. I could tell they had barely unpacked.

"Rowan!!! Your boyfriends here to see you!!" She shouted teasingly. Rowan sprinted down the stairs, not noticing me.

"Shut up Kayla." She said, punching her sister on the shoulder. Then she saw me.

"OH my gosh!! Asa I am SO SO sorry!! I completely forgot!!" She exclaimed.

"It's fine Rowan." I said.

"Well I'll leave you two lovebirds alone now." Kayla joked.

"Shut uuuuuup!" Rowan whined quietly. Then she slid on her ankle boots with small heels and grabbed her purse.

"Mom!! I'm going out...to um...hang out with Asa." She said quickly. Her mom's head popped out of the kitchen.

"Oh hi Asa! Rowan I was going to take you kids out for dinner at McDonald's since I'm so busy and all, but how about you go now?" Ms. Sparks doesn't even wait for an answer, instead she takes some money from her bag and gives it to Rowan. "You know your curfew. See you then!" She returned to the kitchen and then we both heard her curse under her breath as a pile of pans fell on the floor.

"Cold outside?" Rowan asked with a smile.

"Always." I said. She reached for a black blazer and we slid out the door.

"Gosh Asa I seriously am such an idiot sometimes!! I was so busy unpacking I completely forgot." She said, linking arms with me. I glanced at her as my heart sped up.

"Ok. You're not an idiot." I said. She rolled her eyes. "So where to?" She asked. "Well we have to go to McDonald's. I could just show you around and all. By the way, where are you going to school?"

"Me? Oh WestSide Secondary School (Dear Readers, this is a made up school. Just to clear it up)." I nearly gasped.

"Seriously?? I go there! But wait, you're a year younger than me..." All my happiness slowly drifted away.

"Actually, I had to take a placement test and I'm in the year above." I was about to ask why but she interrupted me.

"Don't ask."

"Okay. Let's go." I said. She started to protest that we could go later, but realized there was no point, and let me drag her along to McDonald's.

"What do you want?" I asked, playing with the money in my hand.

"Ummm....A pack of french fries. I mean chips, whatever you call them. And water." Rowan said. I looked at her, but she was nervously looking at her shoes. I went to the counter and said hello to the lady.

"Could we please have a pack of chips big, a water, and a big mac plus chips. And a coke." I said. The lady smiled. I glanced at Rowan looked back, gave me a forced smile, and looked back down. I shrugged to myself and took the tray. Then I handed Rowan the rest of the money and we sat down.

As soon as I started eating, she became another person.

Cracking jokes, laughing. The sparkle in her eye was back. I laughed and told her all about my acting career. She seemed so happy. Then I finished my last chip and put the tray away. We walked out, still talking and linked arms yet again. I started leading her towards Westside as she told me all about her old school.

I couldn't help but notice that she barely touched her chips.
