Back at the house, Esme was buzzing with curiosity about my new job. I didn't want to worry her with stories about my jackass of a boss, so I simply said, "It's amazing."

"You can do this, Jessy... trust yourself," I whispered to my reflection in the mirror. Today was my first day of work.

Dear God, please don't throw too much trouble my way...

Stepping into the massive mansion, I felt like I'd walked into a palace. Everything was breathtaking—just like its owner.

"Good morning, Jessy!" Leah greeted me with her usual cheerfulness.

"Good morning, Leah," I replied, trying to mask my nervous energy. "So... what should I do first?"

"Mr. Erickson is currently abroad on a business trip. He'll be back next Tuesday," she said. "For now, your first task is to wake the kids and get them ready."

"Kids? He has kids?" I asked, stunned. Damn—he's married?

"No, he's not married. Yet," she added with a teasing smile.

Oof... what a relief.
Wait—why do I even care?

"They're his step-siblings," Leah clarified, though she didn't elaborate further. I didn't press. His family business wasn't mine to dig into.

Their room was on the first floor, last door at the end of the hall. As I opened it, something dropped on my head—drenching me in cold water.

What the hell?! A bucket?!

I staggered blindly, yanking the damn thing off my head, only to find a little boy—maybe five years old—giggling like a little devil.

"Catch me if you can!" he shouted, darting away.

I stepped forward, only to slip on something slippery and land hard on my back.

Ouch! My poor butt...

"Serves you right!" the little monster laughed, sticking his tongue out as he bounced on the bed.

"What is going on in here?!" Leah's voice cut through the chaos. She rushed over and helped me up. "Jessy, are you okay?" she asked, concerned.

Clenching my teeth through the pain, I gave her a weak nod.

"Finlay, do I need to inform Mr. Erickson about your behavior?" she scolded, hands on her hips.

The boy pouted and looked down.

Then I noticed another kid on the bed, headphones on, nodding his head like nothing had happened. He looked about fourteen.

"Andrew!" Leah barked. The boy glanced over.

"Get ready. Now," she said firmly.

He smirked.

My blood boiled.

Without a word, he walked into the bathroom—with Finlay trailing behind.

Leah led me back downstairs. After I changed into another uniform and towel-dried my hair, she sighed heavily.

"They always act up when Mr. Erickson isn't around."

"Are they really his siblings?" I asked.

"Yes. Andrew is the older one—he's fourteen. Finlay is six. They don't listen to anyone and always pull pranks. But with Mr. Erickson? They're completely different."

"Hm... I know it's personal, but... does Mr. Erickson's father have two wives?" I asked hesitantly.

Leah paused. "I promise I won't tell anyone," I added quickly.
