As always, the kids' room was a mess. Andrew and Finlay had vanished again—I had no clue where those little devils had gone. Sighing, I reached for Finlay's bag to clean up, and something slipped out. A piece of folded paper fluttered to the floor.
It was an invitation letter... for parents.
Seems like Finlay's school was hosting a program next Saturday.
By the time I made it downstairs—after scrubbing the upstairs floors and bathing Hart, Mr. Erickson's affectionate dog—it was already 6 p.m. Hart had licked my face so many times I'd lost count. He was the only one in this house who always welcomed me with pure love.
"Leah, I'm heading out," I said, brushing my hair back.
"Okay, Jessy. Take care," she replied with a gentle smile.
As I stepped outside, Mr. Erickson pushed the door open and strode into the house, his presence sucking the warmth right out of the hallway.
"Hey, bring me a coffee," he said bluntly.
"My shift's over, sir," I replied flatly.
"I don't fucking care. I said I want coffee. You hear me, Miss Booby?"
There he was—his royal rudeness in full glory.
Fuming, I marched to the kitchen. Leah had probably gone to rest, which meant I had no audience for the rebellion building inside me. As I prepared the coffee, my fingers hovered over the sugar bowl... then swerved to the salt instead.
"You want coffee, huh? Let me give you the 'real' taste."
Mr. Erickson was hunched over some files when I entered his study.
"Your coffee, sir," I said sweetly, placing the mug in front of him.
He didn't even look up. "Leave it."
I did. But I didn't leave. I lingered just beyond the door, waiting. Watching.
Minutes ticked by before he finally reached for the mug. He took a sip... and instantly choked, coughing as he spat the drink onto his paperwork.
"FUCK!"
I dashed off, grinning from ear to ear. Serves you right, Mr. Rude.
The next morning, I returned as usual and helped Leah with breakfast. Everything seemed normal until he appeared out of nowhere, like a vengeful ghost.
"You did that on purpose yesterday, didn't you?" Mr. Erickson barked, glaring across the counter.
"I don't know what you mean, sir," I replied innocently.
"Fuck you, Jessy."
I stifled a laugh as he stormed off.
"Jeez," Leah sighed. "Why do you two always fight like kids?"
"He's just dramatic," I shrugged.
"Jessy, I need your help," she said suddenly, her tone more serious. "I'll be away for a few days. Can you stay here and handle things?"
My heart dropped. "Um... sure, Leah," I agreed reluctantly. Without her, I felt like I was losing both my hands. She was my anchor in this chaotic house.
Once Leah left, I began cleaning the place. I couldn't cook to save my life, so I ordered food. The boys ate when they got home from school.
"Andrew, where are you going?" I asked as he made for the door.
"None of your business," he muttered, brushing past me.
I wanted to let it go. Not my problem. But still... what if he got into something dangerous? What if he—No. Let it go, Jessy.
