After the long meeting, we returned to our rooms. I must've been more tired than I realized because I somehow fell asleep the moment I hit the bed. When I woke up, the clock read 7:30 PM.
Damn it! She said she had a date today! I was supposed to ruin her plans!
I bolted to the bathroom, took the fastest shower in history, and rushed straight to her bakery. As I rang the bell, I silently prayed that she hadn't left yet. Please, God, let me be on time for once.
The door opened—and Julissa stood there, looking slightly annoyed.
"You didn't come to the coffee shop today. I was waiting for you," she said with a pout.
"H-Huh... Sorry. Did you ask me to come?"
"No... I just thought you would," she shrugged, then smiled. "Tomorrow?"
"I'll be there. Promise."
Her smile brightened. "Where's Jessy?" I asked carefully.
"She went out with Uncle Adrian," she answered casually.
My heart sank. Damn it, Jay, why'd you fall asleep?!
"Don't worry... they're just best friends," she added, smirking like she could read my thoughts.
"I—I didn't say I was worried," I tried to play it cool.
"Yeah, right. Come in," she said, stepping aside.
Inside, Tilly brought me a cup of coffee. She had that carefree teen energy, but something told me she'd been through her own share of struggles. I admired them all—Jessy, Julissa, Tilly—for their strength.
"So... cupcakes?" Tilly asked.
"Uh, yeah. That's why I came," I replied with an awkward smile.
She chuckled. "Chill, he just sees Jessy as a friend. Nothing more," she said teasingly, patting my shoulder like I was a flustered kid.
"Am I that obvious?" I whispered to Julissa.
"Crystal clear," she said with a sly grin.
The bell rang again, and in came Andrew and Finlay. Andrew got into a lively chat with Tilly—they were close in age, and the way they clicked made me wonder if this was love at first sight. I grinned to myself.
Meanwhile, Finlay played a maze game with Julissa. The two of them seemed to get along surprisingly well.
Feeling curious, I wandered into Jessy's room. I know, I know—it's wrong. But something pulled me in. I opened a drawer and found... a diary.
Dear Diary,
I'm eight months pregnant now. I'm carrying this child and eagerly waiting to welcome her into the world. I'm learning to make cupcakes from Grandma. Tilly's been good to me... but somehow, I still feel alone. I miss Jay so much. I know I hurt him. I betrayed his trust. I don't deserve forgiveness. But no matter how much I try to push him out of my mind, he comes back to me every night. I don't know if I should call it a nightmare or not. I always wake up before I see his devastated face. Maybe I don't want to forget. Maybe it's the only piece of him I can hold onto.
My throat tightened. I flipped to another page.
Dear Diary,
I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The pain was intense—but worth it. Her smile was as sweet as a summer strawberry, and her warmth filled me with a light I never knew existed. I felt ashamed for ever considering abortion. I used to visit the hospital every day, hating the baby inside me, cursing her. But now, I regret those thoughts. I wish—deep down—I wish she were Jay's daughter.
But one mistake changed everything. I shattered his heart. And now... by accepting my baby, am I betraying him more?
I'm sorry, Jay. I'm so sorry.
I read on, unable to stop myself.
Dear Diary,
What should I name her? If she were Jay's daughter, I'd want her name to carry his initial. Even though she isn't... I still want that. So I named her Julissa Jayme Jenkins.
I froze. Jayme. She gave her daughter my name. My chest ached as I flipped to the next page.
Dear Diary,
I saw Jay today. The man I love... the one I don't deserve. He was kissing someone else. Isabel. I guess he moved on. He deserves to be happy. She believed in him when no one else did. And when he said he liked me, I thought things would be okay. But he never confessed his love. I always had a second thought... always feared he'd leave. That's what drove us apart.
When Esme and Aria said they saw him with Isabel, I lost it. I didn't know it was Tanya's doing. Then I woke up beside another man. I was drunk. I don't remember much, only that I felt like I was seeing Jay in front of me. That's the only reason I... I still remember his face when he found me. The pain.
Now I'm living my karma.
Even if he forgives me, I won't forgive myself. And if, by some miracle, he wants me back... I don't think I can accept him. Not because I don't love him—but because I don't deserve him.
My vision blurred. My heart thudded painfully. I turned the last page.
Dear Diary,
Today was one of the greatest moments of my life. I talked to Jay and realized how—
"You know it's wrong to read someone's diary," a small voice startled me.
I whipped around—Julissa stood at the doorway, arms crossed, looking far too serious for her age.
"I... I didn't mean to... I just—"
She chuckled. "Relax. Just put it back before Mom catches you. She'll murder you."
I quickly returned the diary.
"Sorry."
"I don't mind. But Mom doesn't like anyone touching that book," she said, climbing up onto the bed next to me. "If you're worried about her and Uncle Adrian, I'll tell you a secret."
"What secret?" I asked cautiously.
"What do I get if I tell you?" she asked, smirking.
This little girl...
"What do you want?"
She held out her palm. "A hundred chocolates."
"Deal," I grinned.
"Well... I overheard them once. Uncle Adrian told Mom he's gay."
I blinked. "Wait—what?!"
She burst into laughter. "Look at your face!"
She clutched her stomach, giggling. "You do like her, don't you?"
I didn't answer. My thoughts were tangled. By the time I glanced down, Julissa was curled up, asleep on my arm. I hadn't even noticed.
Gently lifting her, I laid her down on the mattress and pulled a blanket over her.
"You're amazing, kid," I whispered, brushing her hair back and kissing her forehead. "Goodnight, baby."
I stepped out to the balcony to clear my head—just in time to see Jessy getting out of Adrian's car. She waved as he drove off. Just as she turned toward the door...
That bastard Parker appeared.
He grabbed her wrist and shoved her against the wall.
I warned him.
He's dead now.
