As soon as I ended the call, I turned around — only to be met with Jay's icy glare.
I flinched.
"You're planning to leave?" His voice was low, but the intensity behind it shook me.
I took a breath. "Jay... it's better this way. Please understand."
His expression darkened. "Better? For who?" His tone suddenly spiked. "Tell me something, Jessy — do you think I'm useless? That I can't protect you?"
His voice cracked like thunder, and I shrank back, startled by the raw emotion in it.
"N-no, Jay... I don't think that—" My voice shook. "I just think it's safer if I stay away from everyone..."
"I don't give a damn about safe! Not when it means losing you!" He stepped toward me. Instinctively, I backed away — until I hit the wall. My breath hitched.
Jay's hand caught my arm — not gentle this time. His grip made me wince.
"Who called you?" he asked, his voice like a storm held barely in check.
"Jay... please... let me go—" My voice came out as a whisper, cracked and dry.
He didn't. Instead, he yanked my phone from my hand and started scrolling through my call log.
"Jay—" I tried to snatch it back, but he pulled away quickly.
His eyes locked on a name. "Mr. Green?" He looked at me. "Parker's father?"
He stepped closer. His voice lowered, sharper. "Why the hell did he call you?"
I hesitated, panic swirling in my chest. Should I tell him?
"Jessy—" He slammed his fist into the wall next to my head, making me jump. "TELL ME!"
I gasped, heart pounding.
"He... he warned me," I whispered, barely able to breathe. "He said it was Parker... He was the one who tried to kill me." My voice trembled with every word. "And... and he told me to leave the city... that it's not safe anymore..."
Jay's expression twisted into something unreadable. A cold smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"Then guess what..." His voice was razor sharp. "You're not going anywhere. You're coming back with me. To my place."
My heart dropped. "No... please." Tears welled up in my eyes. "I... I can't. What if... what if I don't want to face him?" I broke down. "I'm not ready, Jay..."
He narrowed his eyes. "Face who?"
I swallowed. I didn't want to say the name — didn't want to reopen that wound. But I had to.
"Emmanuel..." I finally whispered. ''I didn't want him to know about Julissa!'', I whispered sadly.
The air shifted. Jay's entire posture changed. His face hardened.
I could see it in his eyes — the pieces falling into place.
He took a step back, releasing his grip.
"Does he... know about her?" he asked quietly, his tone far calmer now — but laced with tension.
I shook my head. "No. I never told him about Julissa. And I never will."
He nodded slowly.
"Then it's settled," he said.
I blinked, confused.
"What do you mean?"
Jay turned to me with an intensity that made my chest tighten.
"If he ever comes back, you won't need to be scared. Tell everyone that I'm Julissa's father."
He wasn't joking. There was a steady sincerity in his voice. "I'm not saying this out of pity. I love her, Jessy. She's mine."
