“I don’t understand… Do you hate me or something?” Ethan railed behind me.

I was trying to get away from him. Getting my books for next class.

“Maybe” I responded.

“Why? Did I sleep with you already?” Ethan put an eyebrow up in question. Like it definitely was the answer.

I swear if teachers weren’t poking their heads through classroom doors, I would have jumped on his back and pounded him to the floor. But then that would just create drama. And people neverminded their business. This is highschool.

“No!” I rolled my eyes at him, walking to next class.

Ethan jogged up to me. “Good. That means I still can” he faked a sweat motion.

“Not even in your dreams!” I answered in a disgusted tone, walking into math class.

I walked to my seat at the back of the math classroom. Did I mention, I didn’t like this class. It was like numbers all jumbled and didn’t have a reason to be solved in my brain.

A chair made an annoying sound on the floor, next to me. Like nails on a chalkboard. I looked to see who it was.

“You don’t mind, right? I mean you don’t even own the school, why am I asking?” Ethan said sitting on the chair next to me.

Now, I hated this class even more. I ignored him, pretending to pay attention to the front of the class.

“So, you’re coming with me to the Halloween party, right?” Ethan wiggled his right eyebrow.

I gave a fake laugh, not giving my full attention. “I thought I said no”

“That was obviously not your true answer. I mean who doesn’t want to go out with me?” Ethan asked flexing his arm muscles.

“This girl, that’s who” I clicked my pen, motioning to me.

“Fine, wanna go out tomorrow?” Ethan smirked.

“Go out?” I repeated.

“That’s what I said”

“With you?” I asked like it was a crime.

“Anyone else better looking?” Ethan asked lifting a brow in question.

“Tomorrow? Like even sooner?” I said like I was about to have a heart attack, out of breath.

“I know, hard to believe, right?” Ethan smirked.

“No. Thank you” I smiled.

“Ouch” Ethan said putting his hand over his heart. “Two rejections, in one day. What did I ever do to you?” Ethan joked. Faking a hurt.

“I’m sorry if I’m busy” I lied.

“With what? You got a boyfriend?” he asked, curious.

My face went red at the idea of having an actual boyfriend. It wasn’t a bad idea… or excuse.

“Yea” I nodded.

My phone buzzed at that moment. I took it out of my back pocket, wondering who it could be?

‘You have one text message’

I slip the screen to see a name.

‘Reuben’

I smiled, when I saw his name. And so I continued to reading the message.

‘I miss you, right about now. Like in a friend kind of way! You’re not in class with me, right now…’

This was like the fifth text I had gotten since I moved here. I could tell Reuben cared about me. Which made me smile wider.

“Did your boyfriend text you?” Ethan was looking annoyed, maybe even pissed.

I swallowed hard, my dry throat washing with nerves.

“Maybe?” I gave a fake smile. This was a perfect excuse! So that Ethan could stop hitting and flirting with me!

“I don’t believe you” Ethan mumbled in his arms as he put his head down, trying to look bored or something.

“Okay” I shrugged it off, not wanting to make a white lie turn into a black lie.

I texted Reuben, anyways.

‘I miss you too, buddy! In the middle of math class! TTYL, 4 sure’

I smiled after, turning my phone off.
