Another week passes and there is no new news about the rogues. I can feel the tension in the air. What will happen next? That is the question on everyone's mind. But that isn't the only one. When will it happen? That is the most powerful question at the moment. We can all the feel the imminent attack. Even Tyler seems a bit squirrely. AT school this week, some of the human students were on edge also. The danger is there, but when will it appear?

"I don't like this." I whisper.

"Me neither." Carter whispers into my hair.

The credits for the movie we just finished watching roll. I can't tell you what we watched or what happened. My nerves are too wound, though I do feel safe locked in my mate's arms. Too bad it can't last.

"I have to go now." Carter stands us both up.

"I don't want you to." I pout.

A melancholy smile slips onto his lips. "I can't miss training. Especially not right now."

I sigh. "I know."

"I'll be back soon." He bends down and captures my lips for a few seconds.

"See ya soon." I whisper as he walks away.

I am sprawled out on the couch doing my best to ignore the tension in the air. It doesn't work very well. Carter has been gone for about an hour, but it feels like longer. He's lucky. He gets to be in training. I bet that is a great distraction. I don't have one. I'm just stuck with my face buried as deep as it can get into the fluffy couch in the living room. I think one of my legs climbed the back rest and is laying on the top of the couch. The other is definitely dangling of the front of the couch.

I wish I had a distraction from this tension. I groan as I sit up. I look around the room. I spot my flute case on the side table. Maybe I could be a good band student and practice that one phrase that's impossible. I stand and shuffle to my case. I pull everything out and begin to practice.

Warriors to the East. Now! Dad's voice rings in my head along with the rest of the pack's.

I look up in time to see Dad run out the door. Logan thunders down the stairs with Amanda at his toes. (He skipped training today to help dad). He pecks her cheek as he rushes off. I chase after him for a second. Carter will be with them soon.

"Shelby!" Logan turns his head to me. "Get back inside! Go with the others to the basement!"

"But-"

"NOW!" Dad cuts me off.

I chew my lips as I turn and rush to Mom. The Matthews are already downstairs with Mikena and Tyler. Once I am through the door, Mom shuts it. We scurry down the dark stairs. The room is lit by two hanging bulbs. There are a couple small couches in here with a cupboard of food.

Stay safe. I tell Carter.

You, too. I'll see you soon.

Then, I am blocked out of his mind.

I sink into one of the couches and run a hand through my hair. I feel the cushion next to me sink soon after.

"They will be fine." Mom hugs me and kisses the top of my head.

"I hope so."

A/N: I am really sorry about these short chapters. I know they are pitifully short. I'm hoping they will get longer soon. This is just my weak point. I'm bad at starting stories.
