Chapter Eight

I was dumbfounded as I stood outside still staring at the 'Director's office' indicator placed on his table.

If only I had known, I wouldn't have been so rude to him from the elevator.. And now this jerk was to be my boss.. How I hate life.

"So I see you know Alex. Why? Are you one his shima's or something?" he asked as he laughed frantically..

"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked trying not to raise my voice or sound rude.

"you're the first person Alex has brought in here ever since I've been friends with that cassanova." He said as he pushed the folders to me..

"So that's your first duty. Read all those it's the company's records for last year. I don't think you've ever worked as a personal assistant before. Have you?"

"Well I did for my former boss but that's all over now.. It was brief sha."

He paused then muttered "all these bush Nigerian girls eh"

I heard him clearly but didn't want to start another fight. I needed the job.. But I'll see if the pay was worth my stay and compromise.

"Well that's all.. Get out of my office" he moved his hands ushering me to get out. "He will show you where you desk is." He said pointing at the guy from earlier. I left the office and followed my coworker.

"I'm sorry about ignoring you earlier.. I was just under a lot of pressure from Oga." he said and faked a smile.. He was fleshy, had bulging eyes.. His hair was also reciding inwards probably should be in his early 30's.

"It's okay. I'm Thelma. You are?"

"Tolu. Nice to meet you again." We shook hands as he showed me my table. It was nice and larger than my previous workplace.

I got ready for work almost immediately.
I began reading all the folders he gave me. They were too many to finish all at once so I took breaks in between.
When it was 2pm most of the workers went out for break.. I couldn't join them because I still had a lot of work to do so I stayed in the office.

"Who's still there?"Someone called out until I found out it was Jeremy my boss.

"It's Thelma." I said aloud as he came closer to me.

"Why you still here. It's lunch time. Or people like you don't eat ni?" He joked and laughed but apparently stopped when he noticed I didn't find it one bit funny.

"I have a lot of work to do. When I'm done with all these I'll quickly grab a snack." I said and continued reading the files.

"Okay look I gave you all that not for you to kill yourself over na.. You can take it home and take you time."

OMG is he trying to be caring right now? Doesn't suit him.

"okay sir. I said, got up and walked away till I overhead him.

" Ah I see why Alex likes you now. Your bums are extremely huge. "

"what was that you just said?" I asked fully ready to pounce on him with all my vengeance.

"Nothing." He laughed and walked away shaking his head.

God saved him he didn't repeat it. I'd have literally torn his face apart. All this spoilt Yeye children.

After I managed to get lunch, I went back to the office and sat down on my desk.. the office was really pretty big probably half of Mr Agungi office. I checked the time and it was almost four in the evening... the closing time for me was 4:30pm and since I didn't have much work to do again, I began clearing up my desk so I could leave early so as to get home on time... the company was farther than my former workplace so if I intended to reach home on time without spending too much on transport I needed to leave as soon as possible..

"Where are you going?" Jeremy called as he startled me... my phone landed on the floor because of the way I hit the table.

"Ah shit!" I cried in agony as I picked up my phone... the screen was now black with a white line across it... now this phone was definitely unrepairable thanks to this ode.

"Why you always so frightened? Any small thing Ehn? Do you have someone coming to kill you ni?" He made jokes again which I didn't find funny.

"You do know that your jokes aren't funny right?" I said as I sneered at him a bit before flinging my phone into my bag angrily.

"Besides you can't leave yet... it's not yet closing."

"I'm just packing up. The prices would be more cost if it should get to 5 so I'm preparing." He probably lives somewhere close and so didn't have to worry about transporting himself home.

"There's a staff bus that takes everyone home. Didn't you know?" He sat down at the opposite chair to me.

"Oh! I didn't know sir. But I leave on the mainland at Surulere." I doubt the bus would reach that side of Lagos.

"Yeah don't worry the bus makes sure everyone gets home even if you live at the dirtiest slum of this country." He joked and brought out his phone to take a picture of my expression.

"Why would you take my picture without my permission?" I asked angrily.

"Calm down tigress. Even if you're ugly, my phone camera will make you fine small... yunno it's an Apple phone right?"

"No o I thought it was a banana phone. Mtcheeeeeew" I hissed at him as he laughed louder than usual.. he stretched his hands out to show me the picture he took and I must admit I looked so pretty.

"Give me your number so I can send it to you on WhatsApp?" He asked as he dropped his phone in front of me.

"You were here when my phone smashed the ground or is your memory declining... sir?" I asked trying to be as polite as I could.. he was mad I could tell and I loved it.

"You should not make jokes at your boss..." he said angrily and got up to leave. "You better get here early tomorrow or else you're playing with your job. Even Alex won't be able to help you again."

I derived a lot of joy from the fact that he was pissed. I could barely hold off my laughter.
