Church sermon went normally with my pastor preaching about "forgiveness and repentance" and church ended regularly on time at about 11:30 and so I had time to head home to prepare for the week ahead. I was originally a Catholic and so I was used to closing early from early morning mass and having the remaining morning to myself. I got to the gate of the church when I saw Mr Agungi. I was shocked and hoped he didn't see me but apparently he did because he called out my name aloud. I and Mr Agungi attended the same church that was how he originally met me to offer me work back then at his company. I always saw him as a very kind hearted generous man if only I knew he was just a cheap bastard like his friend Mr Peterson who raped me.

"Thelma! How are you?" He asked trying to be all friendly. He was accompanied by his wife so I didn't want to say or instigate anything that would put him into trouble.

"I'm doing well sir. Thank you." I said trying to keep the conversation very short but then his wife engaged me in a very technical question I didn't know how to answer. "Why'd you leave the company?" She asked for one.
Me Agungi apparently lied to her that I left not telling her that he was the one that fired me. I thought for awhile of the excuse I could tell her and came up with one. "Oh nothing really Ma. It wasn't just for me anymore." I said with a fake smile although I could tell she didn't buy it since she gave me her worried look.

"Well let's not bother the girl anymore. Let's go." Mr Agungi said hurrying his wife off but apparently she was adamant on talking. She grew fond of me when I first moved into the church a year ago and she made sure her husband paid me well at the company... so me leaving came as a shock to her.

"I have to go now Ma. I have work early tomorrow." I said and quickly walked off before she could call me back. Mr Agungi was tensed and I could feel it... the air became short and thin and I couldn't breathe well. I suddenly started remembering the occurrence at the Peterson's home and I rushed to a corner of the street and vomited all over the place. I managed to make my way home and went to cry in. I kept asking God why I was always unfortunate and bad things happening to me... but I got no answer as expected so I just laid there numb till I fell asleep.

Jeremy wasn't at work this morning and it was weird. He usually arrived first thing before anyone else but today was different as his office was empty.

"Where's Oga?" I asked Tolu who also had no idea why Jerry wasn't around. "I don't know." Was all he could say.

Few minutes later, the Chairman, Jerry's stepdad made his way up to the floor I was working on. He looked really familiar but I didn't know where I had seen him before. He was dressed in a black suit with a wine tie around his neck. He was rather short and was already going bald. He looked at me also  in a familiar way as in recognizing me but made no direct conversation with me.

"Where's Jerry?" He asked but didn't direct the question to anyone so I kept my mouth shut before I got myself into another wahala... Tolu quickly walked closer to answer. "Oga hasn't come to work today." He answered and the Chairman looked at the both of us in disgust as he turned and made his way downstairs.

I simply just went to my desk quietly and picked up my phone. I dialed Jerry's number a few times but it wasn't going through so I gave up and kept my phone back into my purse.

Work was about closing and Jerry didn't show up at all which got me worried. Not because I cared about him or anything like that but because it was unlike him. He seemed like someone who was punctual and would at least tell someone why he wasn't coming to work. I messaged Alex hoping he would have answers and luckily he did. Today was the day Jerry's dad died and so Jerry never comes to work on such day. Alex advised me to be careful with him during this period... that he could be sometimes violent because he had a bad habit of drinking during this period. I didn't picture Jerry as the type of man that drank but then again Alex was closer to him than I was.

I got home and settled in dropping my bag on the desk and removing my shoe. The water at my apartment wasn't neat anymore so I had to buy a bag of water and on my way I bumped into Mrs Adejobi my neighbor. She looked worried and since we were a bit close, I decided to ask her what was wrong. "Ah Thelma don't worry yourself jare. It's one foolish human being that spoilt my daughter life and is now avoiding my calls."
I didn't quite understand as I had never seen a girl with her since I moved into the flat. "Your daughter?" I asked with curiosity filling my eyes.
"Yes Favour. She's staying with her aunty at Osun state. She had to dropout from university because she got pregnant."

Wow! I had never imagined something like that could have happened to Mrs Adejobi. She seemed to in control and perfect.

"Oh I'm sorry to hear that. So this man is the one that got her pregnant abi?" I asked. I knew I was nosing around in her private life but then again who doesn't like gist.

"Yes o. We all thought he was a good person at first but now I can see he's just a useless fellow. Wo i have to go now. I don't want the food I'm cooking to burn." She said and quickly rushed down to her flat holding her wrapper with one hand so it wouldn't fall off.
