Chapter Twenty-Seven

It's been a week now since I resigned from the company and I had not yet found a new job. I got a nice offer from Aaron Holt the chairman of the company I went to submit a file jacket for Jerry some weeks back. He was interested in me and taking care of the baby I was carrying.
I had not accepted his offer to work for him since I didn't want to rush into anything yet... besides the money I got from Jerry's company was enough to last me half a year if I spent prudently.

I made my way to the island, went in search of a job vacancy I saw online and decided to stop by at a restaurant to get a cup of coffee and breakfast.
At the restaurant, I noticed a guy sitting across my table... he had a baseball cap on and he was drinking...

wasn't it a bit too early to be drinking?

Wait! It was Alex. I had not seen Alex for almost two weeks now neither have I heard from him. I made my way to him.

"Alex?" I asked moving closer still unsure if it was him or not... he briefly looked at me shyly before darting his eyes away. It was him, it was Alex.

"What are you doing here? Why are you drinking this early?" I asked concerned... even though he was a total asshole about the whole pregnancy issue, he was still a good friend to me.

"Hey Thelma. This is just my regular morning routine." He said and faked a laugh. "I've been a mess honestly. Ever since— he stopped and took another sip of his drink.

"It's alright. I've forgotten all about the issue. We can be friends again for sure." I said with a warm smile on my face.

He was definitely happy to hear those words and I think he even sniffed a tear in between.
"I'm really sorry Thelma for not telling you earlier... I was a jerk."

I decided to help him back home... my interview was still by 11am so I had two hours to spare. Alex was living somewhere around so it was easy to get him home. I didn't enter his house, well I had never been to his house before. It was big but not as large as Jerry's.

"You won't come in?" He asked as he stopped and turned to look at me.

"No. I have an interview now. I just wanted to bring you home." I said and instructed him to go in... he was reluctant but heeded and went in. I made my way out of the estate and got a taxi to take me back.

"Thank you for coming Ms Badmus. We'll get back to you." The secretary said as we shook hands and I made my way to leave. I felt a sharp pain hit me from my belly... it was painful and before I know it, I passed out.

"Ms, Ms, can you hear me?" Someone asked me but my vision was still blurry at that time.

"She's waking up." Another one said sounded more like a female.

"Where a-am I?" I asked weakly as I flickered my eyes a few more times.

"Thelma? Are you alright?" Now this voice sounded very familiar... it was an annoying voice that I didn't want to hear. Could it be...

"It's me Jerry... can you see me?"

What was Jerry doing here? Why was I here? What happened?

I opened my eyes fully after a while and saw I was in a hospital. Jerry was directly beside me and he looked very worried. There were two other doctors and a nurse also around.

"What happened? My baby! Is my baby alright?"

"Yes Ma. Your baby is fine." The doctor said assuring me as I relaxed.

"You fainted and was brought down here. You've been unconscious for almost four hours."

"Luckily I called you just at the right time... so the doctors told me what happened and I rushed down here." Jerry added. I could care less about what he did.

"Why did you call me? What do you want?" I asked rudely as I turned to look at someone else... anything else besides him.

"I thought you were bluffing about resigning... I'm sorry for not stopping you."

Why was he apologizing? Is that to make me feel weak and vulnerable?

"We'll leave you now. I've given your husband the instructions for you so you must adhere to it thoroughly." The doctor said... but what caught my attention was the husband he said.

"Husband ke? He's not my husband o." I said almost in disgust as Jerry just laughed.

"Sir don't mind her... we're quarreling that's why. She recently quitted her job at a very good company." Jerry said as he put his hand over my mouth to prevent me from saying anything else. The doctors and nurse just laughed as they left us alone.

"Why would you tell them that?" I asked as he removed his hands from my mouth.

"That was the only way they would let me in to check you. Said only an immediate family could come in. So that was the closest thing that came to my mind."

"So you couldn't say brother... twin, cousin or even uncle abi?" I asked in disgust again.

"I think it's a sin if a brother, or worse —twin has feelings for his sister, is it not?" He asked with a smirk. He could be really corny at times. I didn't answer as I rolled my eyes at him.

"Whatever." I said trying to prevent a smile that was sneaking to creep in on my face.

"So the doctor said you've been stressing a lot and haven't been eating right... that you need to relax. Also a few drugs that you should take religiously. Majorly he said you needed rest"

"Thanks, I've heard. You can go now." I ordered but he only laughed again.

"You're just so stubborn. Who are you commanding? I'm taking you home with me madam... besides, Hannah has been asking a lot about you." He said with a smile.

"I'm not going. I'm fine." I could be really stubborn when I wanted to be.

"Well sadly, it isn't a request." He said and got up. "Once you're fine to leave, I'm taking you home with me... hate me if you want to, but I'm not going to let anything bad happen to either you or the baby."

He could be really charming sometimes... but in general he was just a goat who took pleasure in my misery.
