{~ Jeremy Brown~}
It was Saturday, I didn't have to feel guilty about not going to work today, well majorly because there was no work today. My stepdad had left me a few messages over the week, messages that I knew I would never reply to.
"Dad, are you going out today?" Hannah asked as she barged into my room. I had spoken to her about coming in without knocking but honestly it wasn't like I had any secrets to hide from her... well other than my stash of weed.
She has caught me once when we were still back in England. She was only five and didn't have much knowledge of what she saw.
"Dad there's smoke. Something is burning!" She yelled as I coughed... the smoke choking me a bit. I didn't know she would be back early from her date with her Mom and certainly didn't know she'd barge into my room like that.
The stench of the weed was so much in the room, you could literally touch it. I had stayed away from smoking since then because of her at least in the house."No I'm not baby. Why? Have anywhere in mind for us to go to?" I asked waiting for her suggestions. I knew she'd say something like the mall or the toy store.
"Let's watch a movie here at home, with Mom." The last word was still very confusing to me. Why was she bringing her mother into this? I have tried to keep away from her mother for as long as I could but I knew that plan was unsuccessful judging from the fact that we would soon be working with each other.
"Your mother is busy with work you know that. Don't worry I have someone better in mind I can call."
"Who's that?"
"It's a surprise." I said and reached for my phone to call Thelma. She picked at the second ring almost as if she was waiting for my call.
"Good morning sir." She said formally and waited for my reply. "Yh skip the formality. Where are you? I need you here now." I whispered not wanting Hannah to hear my conversation.
"Why you whispering sir?" She asked. God this girl wasn't just dumb, she was the whole fool package. "Anyways I can't make it today sir. I traveled to Enugu for my cousin's wedding and won't be back till tomorrow.
"Wow. I don't remember giving you permission to travel." I said with a little bit of anger in my tone. I wasn't mad that she traveled, I was just upset at the fact that she wasn't available to keep Hannah company and now leaving me to have to call Bunmi.
"I'm sorry sir... I can't really h-hear you... the network- she didn't finish as she cut the call.
God what the hell does she take me for? That was obviously a fake attempt to escape."So who'd you call?" Hannah asked jumping on my bed with excitement.
"Err." I didn't know what to tell her as I thought for awhile. "Let's give your mother a call." I finally succumbed as she yelled triumphantly. I dialed her mother and luckily she picked up immediately."Hey. You busy?" I was hoping and praying she would say she was but sadly her reply came crashing my heart. "Busy no im not. It's a Saturday Jer."
Jer was a silly nickname she called me back when we were still together and even though I used to love it back then, I hate the sound of it now.
"Alright. Hannah wants us all to watch a movie. Can you make it here?""Definitely. Anything for our daughter." Again I didn't like the fact that she was using the 'our' word. It wasn't like we were together.
This was a horrible plan and since I made the call, I was gonna have to face the consequences.**
The movie was halfway in when Hannah fell asleep on her mother's lap. I knew she missed her Mom and the separation really wasn't helping her."Jer," she began "Look I've been thinking... we should try work something out that'll Favour our daughter. I don't like the fact she has to live without me in her life."
"You're right here aren't you?" I fired at her and I knew it was wrong but heck this young woman right here broke my heart.
"Look we should get back together. It'll help both our companies, and our daughter as well."
"Bunmi, we can never get back together you should know that by now. You don't love me anymore and I certainly feel exactly the same way." I said making emphasis on the exactly.
"I already apologized about England. I said it was a big mistake. A mistake which should've never happen. I'm sorry." I didn't have to listen to all this I thought as I got up.
"Hannah's asleep already. You should take her in. I have work to attend to." And left walking into my office pretending to be mad. I was mad not just at her... I was mad at the fact Thelma couldn't be around to save me from all these awkward situations.I was growing really fond of Thelma, maybe because she seemed uptight or because she was the only person who had the guts to insult me, I wasn't sure... but something about her just makes me happy. If only I knew that my encounter with Thelma would only be for a short while, I would have made a move on her.
