The square boxes of dates in the month of July were all crossed out on Gwen's calendar. Three more days and it would be the deadline of her bet with Peter Pan. To be honest, even she had no idea where the bet stood. It had been one hell of a month. From hunting the killer down no matter what the cost, to wanting to help him, was not what she had in mind. She had changed more than ever in the past month as compared to her entire lifetime. She had softened; she had to admit. Her terrible stubbornness had reduced, and she noticed herself being more empathetic.

Back then she always assumed, there was a bad guy and a good guy. However, evil was a perspective. Every individual had a motive. She had learned to look at things differently. What she hoped was that her judgement was not wrong. She could have been making the worst decision of her life, for all she knew.

He killed her sister.

No... She killed herself.

Gwen shook her head, that was not right either. Anna was hurt. And it was none other than Gwen and her parents that broke her. She could not explain things in such simple terms. There was always a convoluted reasoning. She could have said the same for Peter Pan. Calling him a criminal was far too simplistic. The complexity of his tale overshadowed Anna's.

He was a test subject. Then a tool to commit Skul's crimes. Both scenarios affected him the same way Gwen's family issues affected Anna, only worse. Peter did not kill himself; instead he went around killing others. At first, Gwen could not understand his twisted logic, but if Dr. Young's proclaims were true, it made a lot more sense. As far fetched as it sounded, Peter might have been immortal. If their experiments were a success, Peter would have been unable to die. She had no idea how that could affect him mentally, but it most definitely did, in a bad way.

Gwen pulled out her marker and crossed out the next box on the calendar.

So what was she going to do? First, she needed Peter to understand that she wanted to help him, which would possibly be the hardest task. Then, track down Skul, show the world who the true mastermind is, and maybe things might just end well. She knew it would be a hell lot more complicated than that.

Baby steps, Gwen. She told herself.

She was just out the door when Pauline called her. Gwen felt bad for ditching Pauline yesterday. It was the day after prom and Pauline surely wanted to talk about the night till her ears bled. However, Gwen was not feeling it. Her mind was a mess by the end of prom.

She felt like Peter had opened up to her, if only a little, that night, but moments later he shut himself off again. Gwen hoped he would come by last night, but he did not. She waited and waited and fell asleep at about two in the morning. She could only hope he would come tonight.

Pauline talked to her over the phone and invited her out for a late lunch. At lunch, Pauline went on and on about prom, just as she expected.

"Say... During prom, I saw you leave the gym. Where d'you go?" Pauline asked, she was staring down at her steak as she cut it, not making eye contact.

Gwen almost choked, but calmed herself down, "The field. It was getting a little claustrophobic in there. I just needed fresh air," she said.

Pauline glanced at her for a moment before looking back at her steak. The silence was getting awkward. Gwen was done with her meal, so she stood up.

"I need to use the washroom for a sec," she said.

--------------------
"Sure," Pauline replied.

The moment Gwen was out of her line of sight, she grabbed Gwen's bag, which she left on her chair. From Pauline's purse, she pulled out two files filled with documents and shoved them into Gwen's bag. Quickly, zipping it up, she placed the bag back onto the chair. She called for the bill and paid for their lunch.
