He did not come that night. An unsettling feeling was quick to crawl its way into Gwen's gut. She stared out the window, the dull moonlight's ominous glow felt like an omen. He was up to something. Something bad.
Ever since last night, she started to change. She almost felt like she had a glimpse of something much more complicated and emotional within this broken man. What was she thinking? When had she stopped referring to him as a bloodthirsty monster and instead called him human? She was a mess, and she knew it. However, as much as her rational mind was telling her to accept the fact that he was not here to haunt her, she had the urge to find him.
For once she listened to her instincts, even if it led her to do the strangest things.
She pulled on her coat and got into her car. She followed her gut feelings which led her to yet again to Everdeen Foster Home. Locking her car she stepped out, not wasting anytime to sneak around. She strode straight into the backyard, swinging open the flimsy excuse of a fence.
She knew he was here. There was no hiding for him now. With a strong resolve, his illusions would not work on her this time. She whipped her head up to the trees, "Peter Pan, get down here!"
There was silence that followed, but soon, there was the rustling of the trees. Swinging himself to sit on a thick branch, Peter Pan revealed himself. His face was impassive. Gwen stared him down. His trademark smirk broke his emotionless demeanour. Yet even Gwen knew the smirk held no emotions.
"Fancy seeing you here. Missed me already?" he said.
"Don't you dare hurt the boy," Gwen ordered, motioning to the closed window of the little boy's bedroom.
He chuckled and leapt down, "What makes you think I'd follow your orders?" he said, stepping towards her.
"You just listened to my first order," Gwen replied, referring to her demand to make him get down from the trees.
He arched a brow, "Getting smart now are we?" Gwen remained silent, as he neared her. The sudden memory of him kissing her flitted into her mind. She banished the image.
What was she doing here? She stopped him from hurting the boy. Now what?
"You're awfully quiet," he murmured, he was only a hand span away. She met his eyes and tried to strengthen her resolve.
She did not understand why her mind was treading a different path. One far from just throwing him behind bars. She wanted to know more. She felt curious and somehow responsible to dig deeper.
"I want to know... What goes on in your head," she muttered. He looked more amused than confused.
"Really?" he replied. She knew she had to choose her words carefully. One slip-up and she would lose her hold on him.
"Yes. I want to know what made you like this," she continued.
"What made me what? A monster?" he said, he was still taking her words lightly. Gwen shook her head.
"No, what broke you," she whispered. His smirk fell. His impassive expression returned.
"Are you already falling insane, Wendy?" he said, eyeing her with empty eyes. As bright as those green orbs were, they felt hollow.
Maybe she was, she thought to herself. But she could not stop. A drop of water fell onto the tip of her nose; they both looked up. The sky had opened up; a summer downpour was just beginning. Their eyes went back to each other. She took his hand, intending to not let him escape. Strangely, she saw him flinch, ever so slightly, as her warm hand came in contact with his cold fingers.
Without waiting for her mind to think twice, and him to escape, she tugged him towards her car and flung open the passenger door.
"Get in," she ordered. He stood there stubbornly, still looking as impassive as ever.
The rain began pelting down, the drizzle getting heavier. Gwen wasted no time to let go of his hand and literally shove him into the car. In no time, they both got under the safety of the vehicle. The pattering rain hitting the windshield was the only sound to fill the silence. What was she doing? She kept on asking herself but did not have the answer.
She started the car and drove back to her apartment in silence. As she drove, she caught quick glances of Peter Pan beside her. He was mostly hidden by the shadows of the night. He blended all too well in the darkness. All of him but his eyes. They were staring at the raindrops rolling down the window. He was too silent, it irked her.
"You're... So complicated," she said with a sigh.
"More than you think," his deep voice was low and distracted. What was he thinking?
She slowed down upon reaching her building. The rain had reduced to a fine drizzle. She did not get out of her car just yet.
"I don't know what I'm doing, much less if it's right," she said, turning towards him. He met her resolute gaze with a curious look.
"But... I think-, no, I know, there is more to you than just this psychotic murderer. And I will find out," she proclaimed. She was met with silence; she knew his eyes were searching for hidden motives. But she had none.
He pushed open the car door and stepped out. Gwen stayed in her seat and turned to the door. He stood there for a moment before shutting the door. Gwen sighed to herself as she watched him walk away and blend into the darkness, vanishing all together.
She was done for.
